Protect your DE razor blade in the shave kit

Here's a tip I learned in my time in the Marine Corps. You travel regular and use a shave kit bag. The old plastic razor box is bulky or long ago broken. How do I protect the blade in the DE razor as it rattles around in the bag and prevent cuts as you reach in? It works on those new cartridge razors too if you must use them. :w00t:

Take a 35mm plastic film canister. in the center of the side, cut a round hole the diameter of the razor handle where it will go through. Now from the center of the hole, make a straight cut all the way to the end of the open container. Now slip the razor through the straight cut, it will flex to allow passage, to the hole. put the cover back on the film container and you have the head surrounded by the container and nothing can contact the blade. Hope this helps.

Wow! That is a great tip.

Too bad 35 mm film is becoming as rare as a never used gold Gillette President.

Since you can't readily get the 35mm empty plastic film canisters now, since most is digital format, I wonder if the same technique would work with the empty, amber colored, prescription medicine bottles? It might be a little more work at cutting, but it just might work in securing a DE or even a SE :wink2:razor.....

Cheers.

I think those would shatter when you try to flex them while slipping the razor in. They seem to be that type of plastic.

That's a good idea. I use a spare eyeglass case, the hard-sided clamshell type. It holds a pair of razors, and they don't rattle around.

Well, I just tried it and it works just fine with the empty Walgreen's prescription medicine bottle. I used a strong Cutco scissors to cut to the center of the medicine bottle from the opening and then cut a flap out of the center of the round bottle. The razor head fits fine and the "Child proof Cap" fits on as usual.....nice and snug.

Another great use to recycle these empty bottles/containers.

Well, looks like some good fortune may just come from all my injuries!:lol:

Of course they don't last forever. Using every day in the Marine Corps the first one only lasted eight years. The second lasted 15 years then my son stole it. So I'm on number three Since 1972. Actually went through more razors than head covers. The film containers are the perfect size and flexibility but you can experiment. Saves a lot of room from other types of packaging. And they are FREE!

hmmmm... I break down my razor to clean it after shaving, the blade just gets re-wrapped and slipped into a blade carrier. This would be quite a bit faster if I used a one piece razor, I wonder how the plastic rub is on the gold/silver plating.

I only have one, but in looking at it, the newer APS packages look like they would fit a modern razor well. They are oblong and almost the exact width. I would cut this, but I can't, as it's my only one. I might try Target Monday and see if the film counter has any extra. Below are some picts of a APS can and a Slim.

You could line the inside with microfiber or felt. It would cushion then.

A small mp3 player case, the harder kinds, holds a DE perfect. And the net pouch for the ear buds is perfect for a pack or two of blades.
