Proraso thoughts

I fully agree with Marco's thoughts expressed in the thread about Proraso. I don't want to hijack the thread so I'm posting the question here.

Has anyone applied the Pre Shave cream and then applied Pre Shave oil over it before lathering? The reason I ask is that today I was more bewhiskered than usual and I applied hair conditioner to the beard whilst showering. I then used T&H Pre Shave oil (I'm trying to use up the sample pack) and got my best shave ever with a straight. I've never considered combining approaches in this way and I'm considering Proraso under oil. I know the conditioner washed off but I assume it softened the whiskers.

I know this may sound heretical but has anyone any experience of such an approach?

I didn't try it. I got a mild allergic reaction to T&H pre shave oil which didn't help and stopped using shaving oils quite quickly. However, the conditioner would help and the oil would add some glide yes.

I haven't but I have a friend who does this. What he does is to put Proraso pre-shave on his face after washing and putting hot towel on it for 30 seconds or so. Then he mixes his soap and with some of the lather he puts that on his face and then puts a hot towel on it for 1 or 2 minutes. He then rubs a little T&H on his beard, lathers up, and shaves.

As I said I have not tried this. However, my friend says it gives him a great shave. He has a beard that is very wiry and, he says, without all of this prep he would get massive irritation.

Another thread talked about Johnson's baby oil and softening the beard. I was intrigued to find out it's mineral oil which, apparently, penetrates pores and hair. From what I've seen on ingredient lists mineral oil is an unknown in shaving products.
