Proper use of barbicide?

I have a large jug of barbicide that I use for sterilizing new razors I get and other such things. I've been thinking about buying one of the smaller barbicide-brand containers that barbers/stylists put their combs and scissors in when they aren't in use.

Would it hurt my safety razor (SS red-tip) to leave it in the barbicide container every day? I'm thinking I could pull it out, rinse it, shave, rinse it, put it back in every day.

How do you guys use this stuff the most effectively?

Soaking it everyday is overkill. It shouldn't hurt the razor, though not sure about the paint on the tip. I bought some Marvicide a couple of years ago and have yet to use it. If it survives Scrubbing Bubbles and an alcohol dip, i guess I am doomed.

Especially since the Scrubbing Bubbles contains the same anti-pathogen as the Barbicide  (learned this here from another B&B Member, and if you look up the active ingredients of both, you'll see it's true).

Barbicide can and will remove the finish on your razors if you let them continually soak in it. If they are basically clean all they need is a ten minute soak.

I haven't used barbicide before but when I went to purchase some the person at the store said that it would be overkill and would remove the finish from the razor. He said that boiling it and an alcohol dip would be fine. I have also added the scrubbing bubbles step in to be sure.

Ah, that's what I was afraid of. When I first get a new razor, I usually scrub them down with scrubbing bubbles and a toothbrush, give them 10 or 15 minutes in a barbicide bath, give them another go with toothbrush and bubbles, then rinse thoroughly and let them dry. After that I use a little Maas metal polish to make them shine.

So, I have a pretty good routine for new (used) razors... I'm just trying to figure out the best routine for the occasional cleaning. Just scrubbing bubbles and toothbrush?

Oh, and to clarify, I only do this with stainless steel, aluminum, chrome, or nickel plated razors. With gold ones I totally skip the Maas treatment.

Where does one get Barbicide?

I bought a big bottle of it at the local Sally Beauty Supply for something like $20.00. I think pretty much any barber or beuaty supply store would have it. Also, you can order it online from amazon and other places like that.

I let a couple soak overnight without obvious harm, but it's something I'd only do once, when I just got a used razor off of eBay, and don't know where it's been.

+1....And if you drop in a super adjustable or any other razor with plastic parts...let them soak for more than 15 minutes...kiss them good-bye!!

FYI...and I have no doubt you all know this....but it only takes about a tablespoon of barbacide w/a big jar of water to do the job! A small bottle from sally's will last a long time!!

That's what I do .

Thanks for all the good information!

You know, it's really cool to find a bunch of people all interested in the same thing, and all willing to take time out of their day to help each other. I've been impressed every time I post on here.

Badger and Blade is truly a class act.
