Premium NYC

Had a couple of hours to myself in NYC yesterday and decided to go for a shave before an event I was attending. The problem is not being able to travel with blades on carryon luggage and the day b4 I used a two blade gilette disposable and canned cream. What a crappy shave!!! So I went out for my first barbershop shave at a place on 63rd and Lexington called Preimium.

$21 with tip and it took about 25 minutes. All straight blade. I was definitely BBS. A bit of blood went I got back to the hotel room but all and all I looked good afterwards. But, I think if I actually did a three or four pass shave I could get that smooth with better technique using a safety razor.

I got to premium for my haircuts. They're pretty good and $18 is hard to beat. I still wouldn't trust anyone with my face though.

You probably could. I had this discussion with my barber. He believes that because most men can shave themselves to a reasonable standard the expectation of being shaved is that it is a luxury item - men want the hot towels, the face massage etc. All that takes time, time in which he could do two or three haircuts. Therefore he would have to charge accordingly, which prices the shave into "luxury" spheres, ramps up expectations and the customer still walks away rubbing his chin thinking "I could manage better!"
