pre shaving oil

HI,
i am looking to use pre shave oil alot more,as i am one of those where my face feels very dry after every pass! any suggestions for some pre shave oils that might help me? thanks in advance!

I made a mix I saw I guy on youtube make that works OK for me. 70% castor oil, 30% EVOO, and a dash of your favourite scented essential oil. I used lavender. I had then read that you should avoid oils containg olive oil (EVOO) because they will ruin your lather... I have not found that to be the case.

Let me recommend two things that are not preshave oils, but they work very well and are inexpensive: Straight glycerin and corn huskers lotion.

With either, put a small amount in your hand (size of a quarter) rub your hands together slightly and then rub in on you face. Don't rub it in. Leave a coating on your face. Apply lather and shave. I find these products enhance the closeness, comfort, and quality of the shave, especially if one has hard water.

3 additional thoughts for you:

1. It would be helpful to at least understand why you're dry after each pass. Maybe adding more water to your lather would help, or rinsing your face with water between passes, or trying a different soap.

2. I used to use Jojoba oil, which worked great as a lubricant but I stopped. Oils stop the beard hydration process that usually continues as lather is applied, and I found that using a glycerin based soap like Musgo or Neutrogena for washing, followed by MWF or Mikes to shave, gave me the best results...better than the oil.

3. Shaving in the shower is a fantastic way to stay hydrated and avoid facial dryness.

I agree that your lather is probably too dry and needs a bit more water. A splash of water on your face before each pass not just the first one should also help if you are not already doing that.

I find pre shave oil doesn't add anything to my shaves so I don't use it anymore.

The preshave oils work for me. They leave the skin moisturized after the shave as well during. Again, for me, YMMV.

I've used AOS preshave oil and gel; they're fine, rich and slick.

Also T&H Ultimate Comfort pso, exceptionally nice, light.

Gentlemen's Refinery is great; also TOBS pso is super.

As mentioned above, the Musgo glycerine soap is excellent.

As is Proraso Prepost.

Lots of choices.

Just try a couple and decide for yourself!

Also, I'd concur with examining your lather and getting it wetter.

A lot of the fun of this is in the exploration! Enjoy the journey!

A lot of the shaving cream companies do oils. I like eShave and Bluebeards Revenge. Proraso do a cream but I prefer that for afterwards.

This! I love making my own pre-shave oil scented exactly the way I want it. (I use Dragon's Blood EO) You can change it to whatever works better for you. I use a 75% Castor 25% EVOO mix, but I've heard good reviews of Using a 1/3 parts each of Castor, EVOO, and Grape-seed oils.

You just can't go wrong in the shower. Long time shower shaver here, since at least 13yrs now mid 40's. Also if I do shave at the sink, like a day off and I have more time to prepare, I go with a grape seed and pepermint oil I got off a guy on E-bay. It was cheap but does the job.

I've been using AOS Lemon pre-shave oil for a while now, and generally like the scent and shave I get when using it. This morning, I tried some John Allan Slick Water and was pretty impressed. It seemed to rub in better and was genuinely slick as its name suggests. YMMV though, and you may find you may not even need a pre-oil. In my experience, it helps with irritation, so I use it.

I shave in the shower and use preshave oil. It is a must for me. Preshave oils are a very personal preference, though.

Some swear by them and others claim they make no difference. Many make their own. Me? I buy things. My favorite preshave oil is AOS by far. I prefer the unscented (so I can use it with any cream or soap). It is a very thick and viscous--some people prefer a lighter oil.

Another vote for Art of Shaving PSO. I use the unscented (which has a really interesting scent) and like it a lot.

I recently tried T&H PSO and found it to smell like the old 'lemon head' candies from my childhood. It spread easily but didn't seem to protect me as long.

Good luck!

I've tried a bunch of different pre shave products. The best one...for me...has been Proraso Pre Shave in the white jar. It's not an oil, obviously, but after giving my face a splash with hot water and rubbing that stuff in, I seem to have easier and smoother shaves.

PS - The best advice I received from fellow B&B members was to ensure I take as long as needed to make a proper lather on my face.

I use a mix of castor oil, and olive oil. I also haven't had any problems with it affecting my lather. The best thing is its cheap!
