Powers Irish Whiskey

In a previous thread someone mentioned how many Irish whiskey drinkers skipped the Jameson and Bushmills in favor of a less known (at least on this side of the pond) brand. The fact is I had never heard of Powers Irish Whiskey nor had any of my friends. After wondering the many isles of Total Beer & Wine (the Sam's club of liquor stores) I found this whiskey on the lower shelf for $17.99 Figured I might as well bring it home and check it out.

I'm saving the first taste for the Notre Dame / Mich. State game this weekend, hopefully it will bring my Irish good luck. Anyone have any words, either good or bad, of this bottle? What am I in store for?

I like it better than Bushmills or Jameson and I've heard that it is one of the most popular in Ireland. You've found a good one!

I definitely prefer Powers to Jameson -- theres a deeper, more complex flavor which I rather enjoy. I, too, owe this discovery to Pat.

A fine old brand, supposedly today's version contains more grain than in the past, but it remains a great dram. Lots and lots of pot still goodness! Despite the fact that it's made alongside Jameson at the Middleton plant, it really has a great character all its own. You should have no problem polishing off that bottle by halftime! :thumbup1:

Yup. I'm probably keeping whoever distributes Powers in business here in Ohio. Price for taste, it's one of the best deals in the whole liquor store AFAIC. I think it's got about the perfect character balance to be flavorful and smooth.

Plus, it comes with instant 'cred. You won't see it too often behind the bar in the US, as it's not one of the "big two" here, but it's the most popular Irish whiskey sold in Ireland.

i find powers to be actually LESS complex and has less of a "bite" than either jameson or bushmills. that being said it does have a very deep and satisfying flavor, and it's very easy to drink A LOT of it. not better than the others, just different.

It is very popular on both sides of the Irish border, and as already mentioned, is a good choice when you are on a bit of a session:smile:

I'm surprised to hear that it is not widely known in the US.
