What's new

"Popular" Gillette.

I spotted a gold Gillette Popular on ebay a few days ago. It was listed as an Aristocrat. I advised the seller of her/his mistake, and she promptly took it down even though the bids were up to nearly £50. Now he/she has relisted it with a BIN of £333.33.!!! This is obviously an arbitrary figure as he/she is happy to consider offers of round about £99.00! It looks like it's in pretty good nick, but imagine the razor you could buy for that kind of money. Or am I just being naive, Gold Populars don't come up that often so I have no idea how much they go for. Any idea?

It's not the 2-tone variety as displayed on Achim's site so it is not much more rare than the #19 which never sells for stratospheric prices. Good luck to him... What did you think you would achieve by informing him of his possible good fortune?

I saw that and laughed. This seller fits into a certain category. Another example I know of is a seller in a Vintage Mall that had a NEW with the head completely brassed at $18 in a locked case. Out on the table was a long black handled adjustable and a slim adjustable for around $9 a piece. Those went home with me.

There is a certain clueless-ness to most folks who sell razors. They really don't know anything about them and most of them pick them up for almost nothing. There are basically* three avenues for used goods to get back into the stream:

  1. garage sales
  2. estate sales
  3. auctions
* one other is someone selling off their collection. Kind of rare though and I've never seen at a discount.

I've never been to an auction (the kind where they are selling storage units where most flea market folks seem to get their goods), but I've been to estate and garage sales and items can be had dirt cheap.

By the time goods hit a Vintage or Antique dealer, they have come from one of those inputs listed. That - I think - includes a lot of ebay sellers. The odds that this person selling that razor for 333GBP paid little for it is really really high. 50GBP would have been a good profit I bet and the auction would have taken it higher anyways.

These auctions tend to sell for what an item is worth when they are the real goods. Properly identified or not.

It's kind of odd, if I see a NEW Deluxe at a flea market for $5, I'll hand the guy $5. If there is another razor sitting there (like a GEM) and he say's he wants 5 for it too, I will offer him 3. I won't tell him that the NEW Deluxe is worth far more then $5 but I won't beat him down on his price. I don't jump for joy when I hand him the 5 and I don't offer him more.

If I come to the game prepared and the other player isn't, I sure wouldn't like some bystander with nothing in the fire hollering in advice.

Just my opinion of course and nothing against you sam o'reilly. You have to do what your heart tells you.

I'm not sure what you mean by "possible good fortune." I assumed a gold Aristocrat is more desirable than the "Popular" Was I wrong?

eBay has many flaws like your situation besides sniping, raising start bid 1 or 2 days after start and too much time to end before disappearing from the auction).

IMHO they have so much homework for regulations on eBay about auctions.

I have the nickel plated one, all brassed up under the head and no case, but I love it. The balance of it is just how I like it.

My first Fatboy that I paid a $50 BIN and it wasn't cased and it had an undisclosed smallish stain on it. Ridiculous!

My last FatBoy I bought cost $1.50 and after taking care of some mechanical issues, it's now perfect.

That my friend, was a lesson learned.
