pomade question

morning Gents
so here goes I have a few hair product questions. I have your classic mens hair cut and by that I mean its short on the sides / a taper with a side part / the Don" Draper atleast thats what everyone refers to it as who i know anyway .But when i was younger I always wanted to be like my grandpa he was the classic mans man and so as i got older I figured i'd give his cut a try and it stuck. My question is i know he used an oil Im not sure what kind it was or if they even make it anymore i'd like to find one or a pomade. Ive used Murray's Pomade. Its decent but I really dident care for it and i find if im working out water based pomades arent the best so Im looking for a waxy/ classic pomade / hair oil that is decent .Ive read alot of reviews just haven't tryed any out yet so i was hoping some might have my type of hair and can relate and help me out.

Wow. My first recommendation is to use periods..... then get yourself some DAX products. They are cheap and good. The thing about pomades is that quite often you need to mix a couple to get your desired result. By mixing, I really just mean using a couple at a time. For example, with DAX, you might use Wave & Groom for a good, strong hold..... and then add some DAX Short & Neat for some shine and workability. DAX makes a product called Neat Waves that is supposed to be a mix of Wave & Groom and Short & Neat. I have a can on order, but I have yet to try it myself. For $25 or so you can grab about four tins of DAX products in various holds, levels of shine, etc. and experiment with them. DAX stuff can be a little tricky to wash out.... and they make more washable versions as well.... but that's kind of what you get into with non water soluable pomades. I don't think that anything that DAX makes is quite as heavy as Murry's Pomade...... so if you've used Murry's you know what you're getting into.

Another brand that I really love is Schmiere Rumble 59. They are more expensive, but very good stuff. I find their heavy pomades to be easier to work with than say DAX Wave & Groom or DAX Washable Wax..... but they cost about 3 times as much. You might also check into Dr. Rubin's Pomades. Go directly to their website and you can order any 4 tins of their stuff for about $36 shipped. I haven't tried them yet, but I did order a bunch from them yesterday and now I'm just waiting for them to arrive.

Hope this helps.

Dax is good stuff, or atleast anything they have that I've tried. Wave and groom has a great hold, and decent sheen by itself. I just picked up Green and Gold, but thats a wax. The Green and Gold has AWESOME hold, but almost 0 sheen (just a touch). I've also got suavecito original hold, which has great holding power and sheen, but dries a bit more like a gel. I don't know how to describe it other than saying it dries hard rather than staying greasy and mouldable.

Lastly I have American Crew pomade, It is quite old...so that may have affected the product, but now that I'm actually using my pomades (because I actually now how to style my hair now...) I've been trying to finish up the container. It's expensive, and has pretty poor hold, but makes my hair really soft and shiney. Smells good too!

So, my advice is to get yourself to a local pharmacy or beauty supply, and just start grabbing some cheap pomades.

Other good recommendations, even though I haven't tried them would be Black and White or Royal Crown, two more "classic" pomades, both supposedly were used by stars with great hair such as; Elvis, James Deen and Johnny Cash.

I also love the Schmiere products. One thing to note is their containers are considerably larger than many other pomades, so the price difference is not as extreme as it appears.

Also check out this guy's site; he reviews a whole bunch of pomades and tells you how they work in hair:

My barber put some High Life medium pomade(red can) in after a cut similar to what you described last month and then I went out and bought a tub of it. A little bit goes a long way. I like the medium because my hair is not really thick but not too thin, so it works well. Leaves a nice shine and holds great, fully washes out in a couple of days. I know they have it at WCS.

+1 High Life is good stuff. The brand started out by an artisan and DAX ended up buying the brand, so now DAX produces it. Coconut scent.

An extraordinary pomade comes from Andy's Body Electric Tattoo Studio. They produce a medium and a strong version.

The strong gives a very strong hold, not much shine and it smells like ginger and sandalwood.

Ive been using a couple pomades trying to find the "best". Used petroleum, wax, and waterbased.
I luv wax, but to hard to use daily. Use it every 2-3 days. It will stay in there that long.
Greases are good and give that wet look thats recomb able. Also hard to get out.
Some waterbased are glorified gels, but i still use it on a daily basis.
royal crown hair dressing- classic as it gets. Petroleum based pomade with a light hold, that can be recombed threw out the day. I use this as a top coat to a wax or waterbased for sheen. Used it by itslef but dosnt have the hold i like. Said to be used by elvis ect.
My favorit is uppercut out of Australia. Relatively new on the pomade scene and pricey, but ive found their products work the best for my hair. use their monster hold (wax) every two-three days, and their Uppercut deluxe (waterbased) daily.
some other good ones ive tried is; dax, highlife voodoo brew 1 (made by dax now), shinner gold, the iron society, layrite, suavecito... And on and on. Find one that works best for you!

pic of my hair today with just uppercut monster hold.
