Polo Green am I in trouble?

I have been wearing polo green since age 16. My wife loves the stuff. Not sure if it is because I was wearing it the day we met or she just likes it. I sampled polo modern reserve and I think it smell similar but my wife did not AT ALL. Now.... I have heard that the new polo green does not smell like the vintage stuff and my old bottle is about empty. Am I going to be disappointed when I replace it?

I wore Polo in high school. Bought a bottle in the past year or so and it didn't seem as piney as I remembered but it's still good. If you want to try something similar, L'Artisan Fou d'Absinthe reminds me of a refined take on Polo Green.

I haven't worn Polo green for a LONG time. Not that there is anything wrong with it, I have just followed the trends and stayed more contemporary. I'd swear that I've caught a whiff of it from people in passing, so it can't be that different. Don't tell her and then see how she reacts, it really isn't a bank buster in price so I think you'll be safe.

If you want to branch out there are a number of colognes that are in the same family, I'm sure B&B will be glad to suggest. Tom Ford Grey Vetiver reminds me strongly of the green stuff, but is still different enough.

Well, I never wore Polo Green as a younger man but I remember it from my teenage years as it was prolific at the time (even though it was more then a decade old when I turned a teen). A few years ago I purchased a bottle of the aftershave just for nostalgia but have never worn it. I would just take a whiff of the bottle every now and then to remind me to the times (the 1980's).

There is a comment on Basenotes for Trumper's Astor Cologne that says that it smells just like the original Polo Green when it first came out and before all the reformulations. I wondered about that as I have, use and like Trumper's Astor. Well, a few weekends ago I was just bumming around the house and decided to slap on some of the Polo Green aftershave just to give it a try. All day I kept thinking this smells really familiar like something else I've used before. And well, wouldn't you know it really does resemble Trumper's Astor Cologne to me. But Trumper's smells better IMHO. Mind you, my bottle of Astor is over a decade old so YMMV with the juice they sell now.

Now they don't smell identical because Astor has a caraway note in it that changes the character a bit but they do smell similar enough that I do believe that you could use it as a suitable replacement. Get a sample and try it for yourself just to make sure.

Hope that helps.

Chris

I don't have to go too far out on the limb here to confirm that Polo Green is absolutely nothing like Grey vetiver. The TF is very subtle and has citrus and vetiver notes. Polo is balls to the walls smell it 12 hours later, pine/wood/leather they are not even remotely alike. They are both excellent scents, I prefer the grey vetiver.
I put on some polo green at Belk about a week ago, and if it is reformulated, its not far enough off from the old stuff in the 80's that I wore in high school. Why not go to the mall and give it a whiff? I also think that Azzaro Pour Homme is similar to Polo and really gives me the same vibe. Good luck!

My Uncle wore Polo as his signature scent and I spent a lot of time with him as a young child. He passed 6 years ago, and I happened to be in Nordstrom a fee months back and someone had sprayed it close to me. All the memories came back just from that smell, and of course I bought it asap to add to the collection. As I remember it, the smell is very similar. Still an awesome, timeless scent.

Ah, Polo Green - you've helped me choose my scent of the day :thumbup1:

I can't accurately remember what it was like in the old days, but the new bottle I got earlier this year is packed with pine, leather, patchouli... none of your namby-pamby "don't we all smell the same?" aquatics in this gem!

Thank you all for the info. I may try some of the suggestions but I will be buying Polo Green for sure. I dont wear it much but my wife just goes crazy when I do. Its a good scent for my if I am in the dog house and still want some attention. If I wear it on a day I go to work I will get a message that says "why do you have to smell like that, now I will be thinking of you all day and cant wait until you get home". That is why I can never be out completely. It may be out dated and completely 80s but I dont care. I hope the new stuff is not to far off

Dude, you need to wear it more often. Just sayin'

Polo green for a 16 year old?
come on guys. I am sure you smelled like you put on your dads cologne.
I cant imagine a man younger than 40 wearing it.

When I was in high school Polo Green was THE thing to wear. So much so that when I wear Polo Green now (north of fourty) I feel a bit self conscious about wearing a "kid's" cologne. YMMV

+1. This was the one everyone wore, this and Drakkar. It wasn't till the early 90's that Cool Water came along and then everyone wore that.

I still wear it and receive complements. It's a little strong for days I will be in small meeting rooms but normal business wear it works well.

Okay okay, I wore this or Drakkar and wore Cool Water in the early 90s. We went out tonight and I tried the new Polo Green (non vintage that is). Out of the bottle it smells nothing like the vintage polo. After 30 minutes it smelled more like it. Then after an hour is smelled almost the same. I just might have to give up and find some vintage. However my wife did give me the look after a good dry down so it may still work.

I never wore Cool Water, I went the Fahrenheit route with a little CK Eternity mixed in along the way! I miss Polo now!

deruitem, try the bay for the Vintage Polo Green, I recently picked up two 50ml/1.7oz bottles @$45 each, a fair price for a unique scent IMO. I'd also recommend a sniff of Quorum, it has the Pine & Leather notes and lasts a awhile, not Polo but in the same vein.

We all routinely wore Polo in high school in the mid-80's. I also had a bottle of Quorum (still do 27 years later), that not many guys knew about, and the girls loved it!
Not to hijack the thread too much, but I recently sampled Polo Red, went home that night and, without telling my wife, she said it smelled incredible. This will probably be my next purchase. Anyone else try the new Polo Red yet?
