Poison Berry in Tea?

So i'm drinking my morning tea this AM (This 2007 Purple leaf) and within 15-20 minutes start to not feel so hot. As I go to put more hot water in my yixing, I notice an odd clump - which at first (to my horror) I thought was a small dung pellet. Upon close inspection I saw a "stem" and realized it was a berry, so I pulled it in 1/2 and there was a pulp/berry inside. Great... so upon researching it - I find the only berry it looks like is a Actaea Rubra, common in China and highly poisonous (4 berries will kill you).

Any of you fellas ever find berries in your pu-erh before? I don't want to rush to the hospital over nothing - so i'm hoping you fellas have run into this and/or know what kind of berry this is.....

Interesting, the only "berries" I ever find in my tea are just small tea seeds, however that is definitely not one of em. I hope you are alright!

Take three more berries and get plenty of rest.

Yuck! I've never seen that. Hope you feel better. :w00t:

I've heard of some nasty things being found in pu'er, but this takes the cake.

I hope its safe what ever that is, hope you feel better.

speaking of odd things in puerh, Ive found hair, cigarette butts, matches, rocks love that chinese rustic flavor :biggrin1:

I have found them in my green tea and puerh. I have never opened them up however. I doubt you have anything to worry about.

Never found a berry like that, but if you wish to avoid it stick to the bigger factory affairs, or small respected productions. Sure you'll find things in these once in a while, but nothing compared to what you'll find in a baoyan brick.

Good to hear that you pulled out okay.

I'll check the contents of my puerh more thoroughly in the future for sure.

I was sick as a dog... Luckily it seemed to go away after 24 hrs

Joel,

If you really want to ID the berry, you might want to contact the biology department of your local university. I'm sure a professor who specializes in plants would love to help you. When I was in college, I found a scorpion while unpacking my duffel bag after a rock climbing trip. After my heart started beating again, I took the scorpion to a professor at school, who really seemed to enjoy trying to ID it.

I'm glad you're feeling better.

I've had a 1 or 2 that didn't set well with me, (I thought possibly an allergy at the time) and now I may go back to them and just check the product throughly.

Very happy to hear you've recovered.

Product QA in China can be problematic as we are all aware.
