Please enlighten me about the Slim Adjustable

Just missed a Slim adjustable on BST. Don't know much about it but wanted to try it. Now I'm even more curious about how it shaves and why people seem to be fond of this razor. I've been enjoying an Aristocrat Junior. Should I try the Slim?

I'm a big fan of the slim adjustable, as it was the razor that helped me really get some traction on my shaves. With the 1-9 settings, it offers very mild shaves. I've been watching eBay for another one, because I want to make sure I always have a backup. Having said that, I don't really recommend that you buy one there. The BST pretty much always has a better deal (this seems to always be the case for BST offers). They don't come up all that often, but usually at least every week or two there is one. They frequently sell around $30 with shipping and they are almost always in better shape than what you see on the Bay. Much as I love mine, as I'm currently taking a turn with my Ball End Tech, I would be willing to let you borrow mine to try out. Seeing as how you're in TO it seems the neighbourly thing to do. PM me if you want to hook up for hand-off.

Cheers,
Rob

I have a Slim (1965). Great razor, I use it at lower settings with really sharp blades like feathers and at higher settings with milder blades like Astra SPs. It seems to also reach hard to get places like right under my nose. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone.

This is a razor that I own and am leaning toward removing from my stable entirely. As they say, YMMV, and this is definitely a case in point. MANY love this razor but for me, it just doesn't work. BAsed on comments from those who like it, mid-range settings seem to be the most common.

So when you are ready to get rid of it, send duo888 a PM. Win/Win

Thanks Rob for a generous offer. I will pm you when ready, lots of activities for the kids and family coming up. I will be looking out for one on BST.

I am still struggling with the Slim also, but I've had a fairly solid shave with a Fat Boy on the first try, so I need to give it some more time. I think I just need to find the right setting and the right blade for the razor. I tried it the first time set on 5 with a blade I'd only shaved with once before, the Israeli Personna (Crystal). It didn't go well.

I need to try it with a Gillette SB or an Astra set on 3 and see how that goes. That's what I did with the Fat Boy. Set on 3 with a SB. Not a great, irritation free shave, but much better than my first shave with the Slim. Based on what I like in razors, I should like the Slim over the FB. I like longer handles especially, and the smaller head is easier to get under my nose with. Sometimes though, what should work doesn't and what shouldn't work does.

On 9, my Slim matches or exceeds the shaves from any of my other razors, even the Old Style.

Duo888, you've met the requirements for posting on the B/S/T. Why not just start a WTB thread?

Thus far, my 1963 slim is the best razor I own, bar none; 4 for WTG, 2 for ATG & 1 for XTG. Damned close to a BBS with most blades, even Derbys...

Yes - I said DERBYs

I wouldn't discount the bay, just keep an eye on it for some deals. Just this past week I scored 2 Slims for under 20 shipped. They're gonna make great Christmas gifts for some of my buddies.

Yep, you can get deals on the bay, but you have to spend a bit more time looking. And I hardly ever seem to see the stuff on BST here soon enough.

An Aristocrat Junior is arguably one of the best Gillette TTO solid bar razors ever made and a very smooth shaver. You can't do much better than that..... that said, I think every DE razor user out there owes it to themselves to try a Gillette adjustable at some point. I find that I prefer the Super Adjustable short handle (essentially a slim with a black coated texturized grip), then the Fatboy, and then the Slim (in order of preference).... but I get great shaves with all three.

I think the Gillette slim is an excellent razor. I see them for sale everyday on eBay for about 25 dollars. I can get a good shave with a fatboy but the extra length on the slim makes the razor easier to handle for me. I highly recommend a slim.

Has good weight, balance, and handle length. Being an adjustable, can compensate for blades and closeness of shave. I use it on "5" with Feathers and Super Iridiums. Does quite well.

Has become my 2nd favorite razor (Futur is still #1)---picked mine up on the bay for $25 about 3 years ago. Walmart Wilkies are my go to blade and the Slim is dialed up to like 6 or 7.

The slim works better for me than a fatboy. I need to look real close between a fatboy and a slim. I think the slim has a top that is bit more flat than a fatboy. I can get a great shave with a slim. Even though the fatboy gets more money on resale, I personally think a slim is more effective razor for me.
