So I was in France for the month of July and while there, I hunted the antique store and flea-markets for some TI, Le Grelot, Fontenille and other known elements (and got some, but that's for another thread).
I also found this new razor that I picked up for the equivalent of $20.
The handle is heavy, made of Olive wood and brass.
The blade is about 6/8 and has no markings at all and based on the corrosion I got from leaving some drops of water overnight on it while working on honing it, I am pretty sure it is carbon steel.
So it took me a while to hone it, but I got it to shave and made a point to use it exclusively for the last 2 weeks I was there (before that I was honing it and it took me a while).
To add to the local flair, I used some Savon de provence for the soap and it all worked out.
Not the best shaves I've had by far. But considering I only brought with me 1k, 4k, 6k and 8K stone it is not that surprising.
The point is the blade is likely made of some cheap (I guess) Indian steel, but the thing shaves and hold an edge.
The handle is heavy, but that does not bother me.
And about the Savon de Provence, they sell them in all kind of flavors on all tourist spots. They are cheap, but make a nice foam.
The vendor I bought them from was a wet shaver (a DE guy) and yet had never tried to use them before for shaving. Surprising.
Anyway, the first I picked for the Job was Patchouli and it made a nice pink lather.
If someone is interested in experimenting I'd be happy to loan it.
I think I am going to go back to my favorite LeGrelot and Mappin for a while now.
