Petoskey stone brush handle

I'm originally from Michigan, though I've live in Florida for the last 10 years. We are visiting northern Michigan this week and there is a stone that is found in the area that is often carved into jewelry and animal shadows that has beautiful patterns that are visible when wet or polished. I thought it could make a great brush handle. Anyone ever heard of one?

It's a beautiful stone, for sure. That said, I've used a modestly-sized stone handled brush before, and the weight was not ideal for whipping up a bowlful of lather.

It's a beautiful stone but is basically limestone. I think it is too soft to be a good material for a brush handle, though it could probably be fashioned to make a great razor or brush stand.

Love those stones! Have been in northern Michigan dozens of times as my mother grew up in Cheboygan. Petoskey stones are really cool.

As Intrigued pointed out, it's probably too soft to stand up to normal brush usage. It's 400-million-year-old coral that has been replaced by calcium carbonate (the mineral Calcite). Calcite has a hardness of 3 on the 10-point hardness scale and is easily scratched.

I'm wondering of something could be done with it by embedding it in a clear acrylic?

I agree if dropped it probably wouldn't survive but what other wear is using it likely to cause? It's at least as hard as wood handles, especially if some kind of clear coat is applied.

I did see a short candle holder that was close but a little too fat, even for my fairly large hands. $65 is a bit too spendy for not quite right

I say go for it. Like you mentioned, it'll be harder than wood. I'd worry about it being too brittle to shape, but maybe you could reach out to Rudy to see what he'd have to say. Polished up, it could be a reallllly cool brush.

I have, I just stumbled upon this because I was thinking the same thing. So strange, I was just living in Florida too. Did you have it done, if so, post some pictures!

I absolutely love Petoskey stones… if you figure out how to get a handle out of one, be sure to post pics… I'd love to see!
