Peterson 305 smokes HOT!

Has anyone else with a Peterson 305 noticed that it becomes VERY hot in the hand? I don't have issues with any of my other pipes becoming hot, and don't smoke the 305 differently than I do anything else. This morning it became so hot that I had to put it down so I didn't burn my hand.

The walls of this design are relatively thin, so I suspect that this is where the issue is coming from. Hopefully this issue goes away once I get some cake built up in it.

if it is a newer peterson the briars have become less dense, briar in the Eu is getting over farmed it not aged in the ground as long as it was---------- more and more sand pits too , personally i dont buy newer pipes anymore from the known makers,

Used to have fun with Commander Yellow Pantyhose
That's the pipe telling you to slow down. When smoking a pipe with thinner walls, I find it gets hotter faster if I puff to hard, as opposed to a pipe with thicker walls which I can often get away with smoking too fast. With that said, to a certain extent it will likely always feel hotter in the hand than your other pipes. If it's still too hot, you might want to experiment with different blends to find something that smokes slower--flakes come to mind.

flakes come to mind.

I was smoking Peterson's University Flake. I love the pipe for that, perfectly sized to fold and stuff. In retrospect, I was probably puffing harder than normal due to being worked up about the fact that SWMBO nearly light the stove on fire with a styrofoam take out container and a plastic bag.

I guess I'll just have to give it another try on the way home.

My little churchwarden is a hot smoker but flake has cured it from that problem. Nice and warm to hold with flakes, hot as hell with ribbon cut etc.

That's just it. If you think you are puffing harder, then you are puffing really hard. Just like in shaving, if you think you are using just a little pressure, you might actually be using alot of pressure. Or another example, if you are drinking and think you are slurring a little, you probably aren't even speaking English anymore

If ever you think you are puffing too hard, just step away for 5 minutes and come back to it.

What finish is the pipe? I find that the darker solid stained Peterson's smoke hotter than the lighter stained ones. I believe that in these cases the briars breathability is affected.

It's a Peterson System Standard, I'd say it's on the darker side.
