What's new

Peppermint oil and shaving soap.

last night I put a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil in my bowl before lathering. When I applied it to my face it was cooling and soothing, almost like menthol. I bet this would feel great in the hot summer mornings. Anyone else try this?

I have used many essential oils: eucalyptus, lemon, orange, lavender etc. with unscented creams like KMF. Lemon and eucalyptus mix well with menthol crystals. I have not used pepermint but I am sure it works well.

Funny you mentioned it. I did that just this morning and it was great.

I leave it to Mike's "Peppermint Rosemary" - a great combo. Peppermint can be a very refreshing shave and I like it over menthol.

What did you lather with? Sounds like it'd be a great way to flavor some AOS unscented cream samples I have in my drawer.

I do this with VdH Deluxe most times I use it. However, I find that just one drop is quite enough..
I just tried it with my Cella. I used two drops, but I would probably not use more than that. It was very cooling. I did it for the cooling effect more so than the smell. But peppermint almonds didn't smell too bad.

I've been doing this for ages. my favourites are: vanilla, menthol, orange, lime and eucalyptus. I sometimes mix the menthol and eucalyptus together for homemade proraso - it's great!

I also add a few drops of EO to a 50/50 mix if aloe vera gel and witch hazel for AS balm, nice.

How do you add the menthol to your shaving bowl?

You can buy menthol crystals pre dissolved in oil. You can buy menthol crystals and dissolve them in oil yourself. If you dissolve menthol in oil yourself it is significantly less expensive, like and order of 10. Four ounce of menthol crystals is around $13 and in a year I have not made a dent in the bag. Very inexpensive.

I'll have to buy some menthol crystals and try it. That was the reason I tried the peppermint, because I don't have menthol. About how much oil to menthol crystals? What kind of oil? And I'm guessing you would have to warm the oil up to dissolve the menthol?

Where did you buy the peppermint oil?
I got mine at Fruitful Yield. It's a health food store in my area. But any health food store should carry it. The essential oils come in real tiny bottles, about 1oz, because they are concentrated. A drop or two goes a long way.

Thanks for the suggestions. Gonna try this. It's going to be hot soon! I like the Anthony Logistics preshave oil that has rosemary and peppermint, but I stopped using a preshave oil in favor of Glyce Lyme soap. Might recapture the scent with some peppermint and rosemary EOs...

Peppermint essential oil contains a high concentration of menthol. So that cooling sensation was due to the menthol.

I use whatever oil I have on hand. I have used almond, apricot kernel oil and I am sure you could use grapeseed oil or olive oil. I use about a teaspoon of menthol crystals to an ounce of oil. This will make a concentrated solution. You will only need 2-3 drops per shave. You won't think that they will dissolve but they will. I use a dry glass bottle and form a paper funnel to get the crystals into the glass bottle. Then I add the oil. I just put the bottle in a sink full of hot water for half an hour and the crystals dissolve.

In the summer I dissolve the crystals in eucalyptus oil, which you can purchase online and is very inexpensive. I use it with Arko or KMF uncented cream. It makes a nice menthol/eucalyptus addition to inexpensive soaps and creams.
