Pacific pivoting head safety razor, a different shave

I was recently gifted this Pacific safety razor and thought I'd give it a shot. At first glance the thing looks a home made razor with to different material safety bars, an oversized handle and a pivoting head. The pivoting head is what attracted me to try this razor. I went through my normal pre shave routine loaded up a Gillette Platinum and got ready to whack some whiskers. I had about 4 days growth, which for me was about 1/8 long. This razor along with the platinum blade had no problem producing a great shave in three passes. I tilted the head in almost every possible angle and took a few passes to see how the different angle affected the shave. To me, there wasn't much difference between a fixed razor and the pivoting head Pacific I tried out last night. The one thing I did notice was that, one side of the razor seemed to tug at the hairs where the other side was smooth. Upon further inspection I discovered that two safety bars which are composed of a round acrylic or plastic like rod had different diameters which gave one side a larger blade gap over the other. Over all its a neat little piece that I'm glad to have acquired.

I've never heard of Pacific razors. Is this a current production item, or is it vintage?

I've seen other pivoting head DE razors, but I never could understand what a pivoting head will give you that adjusting the angle of a regular DE could not.

That idea of two different safety bars is a cool idea, though. I wish more manufacturers would offer a 2-in-1 shaver like this.

Vintage. I saw one for auction about three to six months back and the seller stated the problem with his the recirculating ball was somewhat stripped and one had to put a piece of napkin in there to keep it from moving. Really neat razor and concept allowing the angle it slant of shave.

Op thanks for the review.

1940's according to Waits. Also, the bottom of the handle should unscrew, revealing a storage compartment "for nail clippers or styptic pencil."

That was one I sold. The socket is plastic. I imagine it just wore out, but adding some extra material in there kept it in place.
