P90X Question

My wife travels a lot for business, and she's been telling me how tired she is of dealing with terrible exercise rooms. I'm thinking about getting her a set of the P90X DVDs and a couple of bands to take with when she's on the road. Anybody have any experience with the system?

I completed all 90 days and have to say it works and it works really well. I had been away from working out for about 2 years when I picked up the system and although I don't use P90X as my main workouts anymore I still use a few of the workouts every week. My fiance was so impressed that she started incorpating it into her workout routine.
Most of the DVDs she will be able to do in her room with just the bands. The only one that might upset her neighbors in plyometrics, so she might want to skip that one on the road(lots of jumping around).

yea i was reading a p90x forum about that and it looks like you can sub certain dvd's with something else ie one guy subs out plyo with yoga bc his knees are bad or something like that.

i've been looking at this bc of all the hype but i just keep seeing AS SEEN ON TV!!! everywhere. honest opinions...worth the money?

I have heard that if if you're strict about following the program that it gets results. I have not used it, but it seems decent. Results similar to CrossFit (it won't get you a muscle up, but you'll be in better shape).

I did two 90 day series because I was so hooked. I originally used it because I too travel a lot. The bands worked great and I was able to do pretty much every workout in my room.

Now I just do Plyo workout and Cardio a few times a week to keep my maintenance up.

I'm 1/2 way through the program right now, and have to say it's great. I follow the workouts, but since I don't have bands/dumbells/chin-up bar, etc., I just copy the workouts out onto a piece of paper and bring it to the gym with me, works great. It's a fantastic program and you don't need a tonne of stuff to get you started, which is great. I think it would be perfect for on the road, except for the chin-up bar which might be a bit tricky, but I'm sure she could MacGyver something up!

well from what i watched in the sample video i had the guy has 3 variations for alot of excercises. in the chinups section i saw he had 1 person on a normal bar - 1 with a chair as an assist and 1 seated on the floor pull the bands down (assuming it was to be a door mounted band) so really you only need the dumb bells if you dont have the bands and visa versa

One other thing . . . if you do decide to buy the program, think long and hard before buying it anywhere other than the mfg. I spent some time reading the reviews on Amazon (you can purchase the program on Amazon) and it seems that a number of people bought disks from Amazon, had an issue, and then were told by the company they would not honor the warranty because they did not buy direct (seems they will exchange defective disks only if you buy direct). There are those that also bought counterfeits on Amazon from third party sellers and gave a bad review, but that is another story.

Something to consider.

It's like you read my mind. I've been thinking about buying it on eBay but I don't want to get taken. In the end, I think that I'm just going to buy her the regular retail version.

I had considered doing the same thing, but then I did a bit of reading. If I do the program, I'll buy direct as well. For now, Wendler's 5/3/1 is working just fine.

I did it for about a week. Then I couldn't handle listening to tony horton talk any more.

I decided running for an hour at lunch was better for my sanity.

The program has its fans and the results are hard to argue with, but I find it unnecessarily hard on your body when you can achieve similar results using other methods. Bodylastics offers bands at a decent price and you get access to hundreds of exercises that you can print out and take on the road with you.

Personally, I prefer High Intensity Training with low impact cardio in between. Takes up far less time and is easier on your body.

I opted to start out with Power 90, since I had not worked out in a long while. If you are in pretty good shape already--go for it!!

P90X will beat the holy hell out of you, rip you in two, feast on your entrails and come back for seconds... then just wait til you pop it in the DVD player and try it out!

..errr hope that isn't out of line, just trying to paint a picture of how hard this set works you (me - a sedentary out of shape overweight father of two). It is setup to be about an hour workout 5 times a week. It is true that the majority of the excercises can be done with minimal equipment (power bands, chair) so it would be convenient for on the road I suppose. But again, it is laid out to be done every day so if that fits into her requirements then... go for... it.. I guess? (sorry, almost feel bad encouraging somebody to push their wife into the torture that is P90X)

I can't really compare to other excercise programs, but as brutal as it is, if you can stick with it, you'll see results for sure.

I might suggest trying Tony Horton's 10 minute trainer dvd set first. P90X is awesome no doubt in my experience. But it is hard as hell. I needed to do the 10 minute trainers for about two weeks to even be able to start P90X.

Just my 2 cents. :001_smile

My brother did this workout. He's completed 2 90-day cycles and he looks great.

Keep in mind, he wasn't fat and out of shape to begin with, he was able to complete the "pre-fit test" with little problem. He wasn't ripped before by any means but he was not out of shape either.

I was so impressed that I bought it and gave it a shot. Here's my "out of shape" 2 cents.

It's hard. It's worth it, if you stick with it. Don't get discouraged if you can't keep up. IT IS NOT A BEGINNER WORKOUT. However, if you can just keep in mind that something is better than nothing (sitting on your butt eating potato chips for example) then this workout like others will work as long as you stick to them.

I'm thinking of giving it another shot with this mentality in mind. Like Tony says, keep pressing play. The people that are in the video have completed AT LEAST 1 90 day cycle if not more so of course they can complete it, however you will notice they are NOT having an easy go at it. So keep in mind this is not going to be easy if you are a beginner and have expectations of keeping up w/ the people in the video. If you keep the frame of mind that you will get better with practice then it's a great workout. If you get discouraged too easily then I'd suggest starting with something tuned more for the beginner.

My wife REALLY REALLY like this these workouts (see link below). She is not a workout freak by any means of the imagination. What he likes about it is, there is little to NOTHING needed and it's a great workout but doesn't kill you like P90X. She is sore from this workout but not to the point where she can't raise her arms the next day LOL. http://www.mylifetime.com/lifestyle/health/harvey-walden-s-no-excuse-workout

I really like Harvey's workout too, it has the exact same "Daily 7" we did back in Boot Camp at Camp Pend. :thumbup1:
