Maybe I'm out of the loop but the biggest "controversial" AS is Aqua Velva.
Let me say on the record though my wife loves the way this stuff smells.

Cologne-wise I'd say Hamman Bouquet or Opus 1870 by Penhaligon's. I think both of them reek.
IMO AV is overrated, but many guys love it..I just don't like any in the AV line. I could put up with AV, though, but my wife has warned me to never buy any.
While I don't care for LV or Clubman, I wouldn't call them overrated, because they are largely forgotten.

IMHO Polo, YSL, Dior Homme, Givency, Burberry to name a few. Good includes TOBS, D.R. Harris, Truefitt & Hill, Calvin Klein Obsession, G Beene GF, Guerlain, Caron, Tabac, Trumper.

I agree, the Aqua Velveeta is over hyped. Now that I have the Velva fans in uproar, let me elabourate. While AV has a decent smell in the bottle, it goes on remarkably dull. I also do not like the over abundance of menthol. That more than anything disagrees with me. The last time I tried it a few months ago I was all set to like it. After application, POW! My face was nearly numb feeling for five minutes. Then that scent. Ugh. Anyway, I washed it off and promptly drained the bottle and put it up for mixing other more interesting scents. Honestly it really isYMMV.

It doesn't smell bad, but IMO the most overrated AS/cologne is Blenheim Bouquet. "In-your-face," "arrogant," "uncompromising". I've heard all that when people describe this. And I don't get it. It's like pouring lemon pine-sol on yourself and adding pepper.

Just for clarification, I don't think AV is overrated. I don't know how anything as subjective as AV/Cologne can be overrated. If 100 people say they like something, but 4 or 5 people say they don't, how is that being overrated?
Floris. Out of their whole sampler there were only two scents I liked. I was very excited to try JF and 89 based on reviews here, but they were among the worst of the bunch, IMO.

Pinaud Clubman, hands down. Had to put it in a ziploc bag when I threw it away to keep my lunch down when passing the kitchen garbage can, and then scrub my hands to rid myself of the stench. Sorry gents; that's one I'll never understand.
Tabac EDT/ASL... there's very little chance that there is something out there that smells worse (to me at least)

My mother wears 4711 almost daily. I suppose I should be offended by your comment, but the truth is she is getting a bit up there in years, more than once I have called her crazy, and while she only has two cats she lets in the house, she has several more that live on her back deck because it's her mission to keep all the neighborhood feral cats from going hungry. So, I guess you're right after all.
