Original Old spice mug/soap

$oldspice.jpg

Anyone know what it is worth? I found one with the original box just like this. I opened to smell it, it still smells. I'm just not sure what to do with it as I'm stocked up for a year with soap already. Sorry if this is the wrong section.

Oh, you're in the right section alright.

Sweet find. I'd put that sucker to use, personally. Though I bet there are some very willing purchasers round here.

with the puck. I've seen em go for $20 on ebay. though, i've seen the mug alone go for that. I'm not sure the soap makes it anymore valuable

It's the soap that is most valuable. I have seen pucks by themselves go for $30 on Ebay.

It's a considered to be a stellar vintage shaving soap, and is heavily sought after.

The mugs while neat, are extremely common, of the two the soap is certainly more rare.

That's a great find, Old Spice is a great soap. Only a years worth of soap? Heck, some of us have decades worth stockpiled!. Put that on display or store it away until you decide to use it. It's been around a long time, a few more months won't make any difference.

What tom said+1- My all time favorite.

I agree with Tom. OS was my go to soap for years until it was no longer available. I think that you will enjoy using this fine tallow classic soap. If you do not wish to use it, you will have no trouble selling it on the BST. Use it and enjoy it...you won't regret it.

Doug

I used Old Spice soap for maybe twenty years, until it became hard to find. I didn't keep on using Old Spice aftershave nearly as long. I was given a complete gift set, aftershave, brush, cologne, mug, soap (both mug, and a separate bath soap, I think), and talcum powder. The mug was not one of the short, stubby ones (I don't remember it that way), but in my memory, was taller. Since the recollection is going back nearly 60 years, it isn't that clear any more. I broke it after a couple of years, and used a Burma Shave mug instead.

I've been looking for something similar to the image below, but the handle on this one looks far too small:

The base (in my memory) had a flare, and the ridge close to the bottom looks wrong. But I went ahead and bid enough to get this one. Maybe when it gets here, it will seem more familiar after all!

I have bought two unused mug/soap combos on the bay, $30 for one, $27 for the other, the latter also included an empty OS mug, an old brush, and a tube of Williams. I think I got a great deal on that one. I would say going rate is around $25-$30.

I would have to echo the comments of others here. I have 4 OS mugs, all in pristine condition, all found for under $9 at my local antique stores. I have purchased numerous pucks of vintage Williams at my local antiques stores as well. I have yet to see a puck of OS soap- though I keep looking. The soap is certainly worth more.

I've been kicking myself for not picking up a nice OS mug at the local thrift for $6. While they are common, I think I thought they were more common than they are.

Do these old OS soaps have tallow?

on the ingredients it has sodium talllowate,Potassium stearate, water, sodium cocoate, potassium tallowate, sodium stearate, potassium cocoate, glycerin, sodium chloride, fragrance, titanium dioxide, benzyl alcohol, trisodium hedta, bht.

I guess I got a good deal then. Last week I scored the same mug, with soap and a 3oz refill, plus two brushes for $10 at a local thrift shop. One brush is an Every-Ready H40 in very good shape.

That is actually a coffee cup that came in a set called the Morning Refresher that included AS and shave cream, sold in 1984 and 1985. I have three of them and use one every day as my coffee cup.

In my memory, the OS mug was shaped very traditionally, with a bit of a "waist" before flaring back out again.

Well, it's not so obvious on that one (Surrey), but right where the handle attaches at the bottom, the mug has a narrower diameter, and the rim bead is not pronounced, nor is the lower ring particularly pronounced.

I found a mug like the one pictured in the original post....it was in a box stored away...apparently my dad used to use it!
