Open comb---Why?

What function do the teeth on an open comb razor serve? Just wondering if anyone could give some clarification. Thanks.

They serve essentially the same function as a safety bar on a SS or modern Merkur, namely that they sit between most of the blade and your skin. The open comb design was King Gillette's original design - the safety bar was a later innovation.

They are the original design by Gillette a predate the safety bar razor buy 30 + years and some people consider the shave superior.
The purpose of the combs are to prevent you from cutting your head off.

nothing can cut down a full beard quite like an open comb or a straight. I have found that having the teeth there instead of a bar makes it unclogable...

I must agree.

Anymore than 3 days growth and I go to an open comb or a slant. Although I use a few straight bar razors, my regular every day razor is a Gillette open comb.

Recently aquired 2 open tooth gillettes but have yet to test them but they do seem pretty popular on here.
