Open Comb Bent Tooth

Gentlemen,

Knowing that I'm a collector, my sister is sending me an open comb Gillette she says has a bent tooth. While I won't know the type of razor or extent of the bend until it's arrival are there any general guidelines or recommendations on how to properly straighten a OC tooth? I haven't dealt with this issue in any of my previous acquisitions.

Happy shaving!

Rick

No. Once a tooth is bent there is little hope of straitening it without breaking the tooth off in the process. You'll want to make certain that the blade bed and the cap are straight as well. Sometimes the impact that bent the tooth will also bend the head of the razor. Put a blade in it make sure the blade doesn't warp or have uneven gaps or exposure when the razor is assembled.

Not that I've ever repaired a razor, but I do repair cars. I think maybe some heat to soften the metal, the move the tooth with some pin nose pliers maybe. The only issue with heat is that it may need replating if any damage is caused.

From experience, I can say DO NOT try to straighten it cold. It WILL break.

That said, a competent jeweler of jewelry maker who a torch should be able to heat it and straighten it successfully. However, the heat may damage the plating.

My advice. Find someone who can do the straightening correctly or live with it. In most cases a bent tooth has no effect on the razor's ability to shave.

Would taking the tooth of and sanding to a nice shape and doing the same to every other tooth to keep it looking nice be an option the side with less teeth may turn out to be more aggressive by that I mean more efficient at removing hair. And the other side will be a normal comb rake still? And again would need plating.

IMHO removing teeth like that would be a serious error.

Were it mine, I'd get the tooth straightened by someone who can do it right or just leave it as is and use it.

Unless its a particularly valuable razor, I probably wouldn't put the extra time and effort into it. I'd just use it.

Not seeing a photo it's hard to suggest what would be best. I a lot of cases that I've seen its usually one pod the end teeth that's bent inward. If you're lucky and that's the case ie./|||||||||\ it shouldn't affect the shave.
