One boar to rule them all

Seems like there have been quite a few boar brush related threads as off late. I think it would be interesting to see if there is some agreement however. So, if you were only allowed to own one boar brush, what would it be and why?

My Semogue LE 09 knot, set deeper by 5mm. Set this in a translucent, faux tortoise copy of the LE handle, and I'm golden.

But an existing brush? Either my LE, or Rudy Vey custom using an Omega 24x55mm knot.

My Semogue 830 if I could only have one. If that were not possible I'd have to really think about whether it would be the Semogue Owner's Club or the 1305 It would be a really tough call.

Probably a Semogue. Hard to pick between the SOC, the 830 and 1305- all fine brushes.

It might just be my brand new Semogue 1438 that I received just yesterday.
haven't even shaved with it yet (will this morning) but yea, it's just that nice. Small and well proportioned with a great looking handle. I could live with it as my only brush. I think it was about $20 or so.

... It does everything that a shaving brush should and does it well.

For me that's REALLY the bottom line. The question should be whose brushes are the most consistent in quality, and the consensus seems to be something by Omega or Semogue, unless you find a brush from another brand that impresses you. Given the YMMV factor, the field really is wide open.

For 20 years or so I have "known" that boar sucks, and that a "real" brush is a badger. It was in every magazine, every book, etc.

Then a few months ago it seems like everyone starting talking about boar. I took the challenge, bought a $10.00 boar, and haven't looked back.

I have a feeling that my one and only would be a Semogue. I'm not sure which model, but the 830 I have is amazing, and I'm should be getting my 620 in a few days.

So far, my Semogue 830. Had I given my SOC a fair shake, it might top that. Hope to rectify that in the future.

If I were going to build one, I'd agree w/Klarion's custom. I'm hoping we get a pretty sweet little number out of the new Semogue custom (22 x 50 premium).

+1. I have a 1305 and a SOC as well as 3 Omegas, and the 1438 just has the best overall qualities for me - small/medium knot size, relatively low loft, good back bone and soft enough but not too soft tips, nice comfortable handle. If it had a better handle shape, my Omega 21047 would be a contender as well. For those who like creams/bowl lather/like higher loft, the Semogue 1305 is spot on.

That's why this gent started this thread in the first place. Don't you think?

Lots of nice brushes to choose from and still breaking in a few but from the ones I have used more than just a few dozen times I think it would be the Vulfix 2189. Small, short (45mm) and not overly dense but a perfect face-latherer and I have yet to come across a soap or cream that can't be made into a perfect lather.

My Omega 30005. Why? Why not? It does everything that a shaving brush should and does it well.

This same brush is identified as a 10005 in some places. It is really a fantastic brush. I think just about any Omega boar would be equal. Just select the size and color you prefer.

Oddly, I think the X0005 brush model breaks more people than any other Omega boar. Seriously, I think I see that beechwood model up for sale more than all other types, even the wildly popular 49 or 48, claiming to have given up on boar brushes.

I could see that. The handle feels almost too light, it's slippery when wet and for me, I know because of all this that I'm holding a $12 shaving brush.
