Omega Pro 49 Noob Review

Hey everybody,

So I ordered an Omega Pro 48 (corrected) last Friday and just got it yesterday. Didn't have much time to fiddle with it last night to due to getting home late from taking the Mrs to a MRI in Cinncinnati. So after finally being able to really take a look and get my impressions of it today. First off, wow it's big. I attached a picture of my old brush and the new Omega. The old one as you can tell is a AoS brush that I got in a pack with some Sandalwood shave essentials. It definitely has weight and size vs the old one but still feels very comfortable in my hand. Being as inexpensive as it was I really wasn't expecting anything high quality but it feels very solid. From the handle to the loft and all the way to the tip, it is very...precise it seems. The handle is made of high quality plastic that feels like it is 2 inches thick. No flexing or movement what so ever and the silver finish is very clean.

I know it will take a few weeks to bloom and really come into its own from what I have read.

It soaks up water like a champ and holds it unlike the AoS brush, but given the size it should. I did a quick test lather with both the JB shave cream and the AoS Sandalwood shave cream and lathered both of those up amazingly. I have some Mikes and Cella on the way so I can't wait to actually get real lather with those.

Right off the bat I did notice a little smell to it. I'm guessing this is what people call the piggy smell, however it does have a little animal scent I think it's more of a cleaning agent smell. Again that's my personal perception on it. When lathering the smell quickly went away and was replaced by the cream'a scent.

I haven't shaved with it yet, I am going to wait a couple days and let the scruff come out an see how it does with a thicker wirey hair. So far though I am very impressed with it. It may be a little larger then I expected but I think will be very comfortable in my hand. For the price I would definitely recommend it for anyone wanting a larger brush or even if your just starting out.

I will follow up on this post once I use it with its performance vs the smaller brush. If any current owners have any tips or trick please let me know. I definitely want to get the maximum performance from this brush!

Thanks for reading!
Adam

It's a great brush. Holds a lot of lather, covers your face with great lather with a few strokes, brakes in quickly, massages your face nicely. It does smell stronger than my other brushes and it will take longer to get rid of the smell. Put it in a mug with warm water and change water every 30-60 minutes for a few hours. When shake the water off and let it dry completely. I just love to face lather with that big girl. :thumbup1:

A staple brush for me, even with badgers of great quality and cost in my den. Face lathering luxury and one of the few remaining great bargains in wetshaving.

When people see this thing, or read its specs I fear they discount it as being "just too big". But it's really not. The size of the knot allows it to hold more water and more lather than some other boar brushes I've tried. And the knot doesn't splay at ll on my face. So what you see in pictures is really about what hits your face. It might be one of the best value brushes anyone can find, and certainly the best bang for your buck for anyone likes to use a big brush for bowl lathering.

The 49 is one of those brushes that you'll eventually try or own. Very soft when broken-in but still useable out of the box. I love using croaps and MWF with it. Enjoy!

Adam... I loved mine when I had it but I sold it off in a spate of simplicity and minimalism. I would consider grabbing one again someday as it is a very nice brush!

My brush of choice, even over my WD silvertip. I think I may soon go for the even bigger 10098. Makes a great lather out of anything, applies it well and easily, and is just softer than any $10 brush has a right to be.

The only criticism I've ever heard about it is that it's too big and not precise with the soap application. I really don't get much soap anywhere I don't want it and even if I do, it's soap for Pete's sake! It's not like you don't have water nearby. Is is really that hard to get soap off your face? Seems a bit silly is all I'm saying. :)

+1 exactly. I love that brush, it sits right next to my Simpson 58, Plisson and T&H/Rooney classic large.

You know I can see that, but at the same time when I look at the Omega then at the smaller AoS brush, because of the backbone that the Omega has I can honestly see how it is much more precise. And as you said it's soap, if somehow you end up getting it in your eye or on top of your head using this brush...well maybe you should rethink your technique....and a few other things. But I am so excited to use it! I just want to wait for the new soap. Should be here by Thursday!

Glad to see I'm not the only Hoosier that enjoys shaving. You wouldn't happen to know of any places in town that cater to our special hobby? I really would rather buy local if I could, but it's so hard to find anybody that sells this stuff. Especially on the Southside haha.

Also another quick question, what would be a solid in between brush(size wise) between these two? Probably would want badger next but a solid bang for your buck one. Gotta be thinking ahead!

I just got a Whipped Dog 30mm silvertip. Most people thing this is a huge brush, but when a 49 is your everyday, it just feels normal. It's a great brush and inexpensive for what it is. They also make a 24mm and they offer a pure badger, which I hear is very soft with minimal scritch. So 30 or 24, silver or pure, any of those combos would be a great in between.

Adam, I have not found anything on the Northside either. Years ago there was Moorman's perfumery that had Geo. F. Trumper among others and Nordstrom carried T&H... Both GONE. I moved back to Indiana last year from years in Florida to get married. Wouldn't consider Florida again but would love to move my bride out West. Denver, Seattle, Phoenix....

That's the Pro 48, not the Pro 49 ;)

I enclose a pic of my own when it was quite new and not fully broken in.
Wait some weeks and see...
It's one of my fav brushes :001_wub:

You are right! I didn't even catch myself and what I typed. Will be corrected. Must have had a 9 on the brain from how good this brush is!

I know what you mean, nothing like the vast mountain ranges around Denver or the large amount of ski slopes like Breckinridge, Keystone, or Vale. Love it Out there and in Arizona around Flagstaff. You know the funny thing I tried calling Moorman's recently because I couldn't find them with Google Maps and their answering service still is on there. So I assumed they were just closed for the day when I called. Disappointing really.
