What's new

Old Types are YMMV!

I guess the old adage still holds true!

I have recently taken to shaving with a Gillette Old Type rather than the 40's Super Speed I am accustomed to and have found that the Old give me a closer shave and is irritation free and allows for easier ATG passes on my neck than the SS so I lent a WWI Khaki Set Old Type to my friend Russ who is a regular Tech shaver and told him of the miracle shave of the open comb old.........he tries it and just calls to tell me it left him with MAJOR razor burn  I guess different faces just read razors differently. I am thinking of lending him a NEW because he likes the idea of the comb in the hopes that he gets a different result than he did with the older razor.

YMMV applies for anything. Russ might try a different blade in the old type and get a perfect result...

I prefer the NEW to the old type but love both!

He might also try adjusting his technique. What is he accustomed to shaving with? Dollars to doughnuts he's using too much pressure if he switched from a multiblade, or even a tech.

I talked him into switching from an electric "shaver" to a Tech back in the summer and he loves wetshaving :thumbup1: He decided to try the Old but I guess it just isn't for him. At least I got him off the electric gizmo's!

The only Old Type that I use occasionally is a Big Fellow that has somewhat heftier teeth than the majority of Old Types. Definitely needs a lighter touch.

+2 This is the only OLD type I have used...I did my homework first, asked the experts, and so far have had 3 fantastic shaves with Old BF.

I think for my shave this afternoon I am gonna switch the 1919 Khaki set head to my handle and see if I can detect a difference in the shaves of the older thin cap razors and the thick cap old type I have been using.
