Old Spice Mug Question

I just got my old spice mug in the mail. I believe it an early glass mug #6 (1961-64)

So I put a puck of Tabac in the mug, but it doesn't sit all the way into the mug. Rather it sits on the little raised lines inside the mug. The puck fits in very firmly with just a couple mm of space on the sides. It sits about 1cm flush from the top of the mug.

Is this generally how you would position a soap in an old spice mug or are you supposed to push it all the way to the bottom? I am a bit concerned that water will collect below the puck...but I can't seem to push the puck any futher down because the mug tapers a little bit and has those raised lines on the bottom.

Well, you could mill it and press the shavings into the mug. I did that with a Tabac shaving stick and it worked great.

I HOPE you were trying to link the pic. Your original post was just an HTML quote box. So I edited it to show the mugs...

BTW, I believe that is the same mug I have as well, I think I picked it up for .25 cents, but I had them toss in a new and unopened package of cologne and aftershave.

You could try putting the soap and the mug inside the microwave for a few seconds to soften it up. While soft, just push it down. You are correct that if you use it as is, water will collect under the soap.

Good luck.

I would recommend NOT putting it in a microwave. I have heard from some of our soap mistrisses (sp) that the instant heating will change the composition of some soaps and it might turn into a gelatanous mess. I would soften the bottom by puting it in hot water THEN push down into the mug.

Thanks all, I'll give it some work. Yeah i couldn't exactly figure out how to do the whole picture thing.

Yeah, when you're paying that much for an Old Spice mug, you'd better be getting some freebies.

If you're handy with a blade, you could whittle down the bottom edge of the puck and gouge out little spaces where the ridges dent the puck so that it fits.

Pretty easy, find the pic you want to show, either 1) click on the pic if you are able to and copy what is in the address bar, or 2) right click on the picture, go to properties and copy the address. Come back to B&B and click on the landscape button (under the undo button above) and paste the link in the box that opens up. Hit enter and submit..voila.

I know the first part sound confusing because there are two (really a bunch more ways to get the address) but once you do, it's a cake walk.

This is hilarious. I JUST got back from the mailbox 20 minutes ago and got my tabac order. 10 minutes ago I did exactly what the OP did. My puck is a little over a cm from the top but is so tight on the edges that the water wont slip though. My MWF in the VDH bowl is the same. I pried it out one day to find the bottom was entirely clean. Doesnt bug me much.

As far as when the puck runs out, we'll see. I've been doing this for 9 months and have been rotating lathers so much that the most i've used was the MWF that now has a slight curvatutre.

I pried the puck out, used a razor blade to shave the edged down, and now I believe its all the way down. Thanks guys

I actually had the identical issue with a puck of Ballard Organics shaving soap in my Old Spice mug. I pushed it as far as it would go and it wedged itself on top of the ridges. It looks to be so wedged in that there's no space around the edges for water to enter. Also after a couple of lathers, whatever water that was o top of the puck seems to have softened the soap arond the edge and sealed it up.

Still, for peace of mind, I will probably lift the puck and shave it down so that it sits on the bottom of the mug.

I have many Old Spice mugs because I was an old spice user for many years. The OS mug with the raised sections is there by design. Most of late OS mugs, with the exception of the larger blue and black mugs, had those raised sections. It is my understanding that they were there for the purpose of not allowing the soap round to go all the way to the bottom and thus rest in the water. The same is true for the Tabac jar. The design theory is the same. I think that it is good practice and in fact I like the puck elevated a bit so that I am less likely to contact the edge of the mug with the handle of the brush.
I have used this same concept in some of my other mugs to raise the soap up a bit. In the larger mugs like my pewter Ralph Lauren mugs I use a standard NHL hockey puck. Imagine that! :001_smile

Enjoy your shave,

Doug
