Purchased some Peterson Old Dublin last night, as everyone here seems wild about latakia blends and my interest was piqued (no, Frogmorton was not available). Upon opening the canister, I discovered the smoky scent that apparently is attributable to latakia. This scent was neither good nor bad, just present. After loading and lighting the bowl, I found the tobacco to be a bit sour at first, moving toward a mellow slightly sweet flavor and then to a very smoky flavor at the end (of course some of that had to do with the ash in the bowl I guess). It was good, but did not knock my socks off.
I'm pretty new to the pipe, and have only really smoked a blend from a local tobacco shop. I think it is primarily a mixture of Virginias, but I'm not sure. Either way, it's good but a bit boring. Here's what I am looking for: something a bit on the sweeter side, but not flavored. So, what variety of tobacco/blend should I be looking to find? For that matter, the guy at the tobacco shop told me that I could return the Old Dublin and exchange it for another Peterson if I wasn't crazy about it (something I need at least another bowl to decide). If I do that, is there a Peterson I should try? Thanks in advance.
