Noticing a Trend With the Merkur Slants

I keep noticing multiple slants for sale in the B/S/T forum. Is the appeal of these fading? I personally have not had the pleasure to use one, but I was of the mindset that they were somewhat desirable. Granted, none of them are going unsold, but it makes me ponder why so many people are selling them?

Thoughts?

I sold a couple simply because I had backups. I have 2 in my rotation (barber pole, 37G) and still have yet another backup which I may consider putting up.
I wouldn't think of giving any up if I didn't have extra...and as you mentioned, they did sell quickly so people are interested (and a lot of vendors seem to be out of stock).

I'm not sure why. I've used mine twice, and have never felt in danger. If anything, both shaves seemed easier than with my SS black tip.

People buy them, are initially more impressed with themselves for being up to the challenge of shaving with it then the actual shave. The honeymoon ends and they sell it.

This speaks to me, I have experienced similar situations. I have been contemplating purchasing one myself, but I can't bring myself to pull the trigger, I don't see it giving me a better shave than that of my Futur or R41.

My opinion is: People purchase the slant out of RAD-related curiosity as it is a unique offering amongst a sea of CC and OC razors. The hope is often that the slant will provide the best of both so to speak. As technique improves or time passes, many settle into the OC camp or CC camp and find their 'razor of choice', leaving the poor slant to be neglected.
I love my slants 39C/37C - but admittedly they don't get the time they deserve because I am currently infatuated with my OCs. YMMV. :biggrin1:

The same could be said about many razors that are in production and most vintage too. Lots of sales of lots of razors. The B S T is kinda like a big pass around. 99 percent of the time something modern is going for under retail which is a good thing for the community. I just bought a 37c last night, missing the sales. I did not mind paying retail to one of the great vendors. Will I keep the slant? I dunno I have yet to try it. If I end up not liking it as much as I thought I would, I may B S T it in order to try another razor. Acquiring razors for USE, not for collection is the ultimate YMMV. I am suspect very much the 34 c or Tech or 40s SS I have could be the only razor I use if I chose that route. I like a lil variety. Same thing for soaps/cream and AS etc.

I may have some ragin' AD but I want to have Merkur Monday, Tech Tuesday, Windsor Wednesday, Speick Saturday. Toothy Thursday (OC), Figaro Friday (Italian themed),

I really have come to enjoy my shave time in the morning as ritual and as meditation.

That is way long as far as answers go but your question sparked my noggin.

Your answer "sparked my noggin" as well, a different razor for everyday of the week, very ambitious sir! I like ambition, but I'm a bit of a creature of habit, in general, once I find a grove I enjoy, I don't stray too far!

I sold mine today because I've taken the plunge into straights and I don't want to be tempted. The extra money for straight paraphernalia is a plus as well.

My mindset is that if I really really miss it then I'll buy a new one.

+1. I've owned 2 Merkur Slants and sold them because I wanted to fund another item. The resale value is good and you can always find one. I can't say the same about my Hoffritz though...

Indeed! The Hoffritz specimens are beautiful ... yet another example of 'they don't make them like they used to...':crying:

Here's one for kicks (and salivation purposes)....

This particular one was gold plated but when it came in my hands it was in pretty bad shape. I polished it down and it has a pretty neat glow to it.

I don't see slants for sale more frequently than any other razor, I'm guessing that you just notice those ads because you're thinking about getting one.
