Anyone here win this fatboy? I was tempted to bid when it was sitting at $113 for awhile, but knew it wouldn't stay there. I thought about $150 or so. I was way off. If you win something like this do you dare use it?
I would never bid high enough to beat out the kind of collectors who would keep it in that original packaging forever.
But, yes, if all the sniping services crashed so that the collectors' bids didn't get through, and if I ended up as the winner at a price that I would pay, I would take it out of the package and shave with it.
...I would shave with it and enjoy every moment of it...
then a few days later I would have the same 'buyer's remorse' that I get after buying a new car, realizing that I just lot a huge chunk of the value of it...
I love how someone wanted the seller to do a Buy it Now. He was smart to leave it on auction.
It's a collector's item. I think there are enough really nice Fatboys out there to shave with without unwrapping that one. That said, if the fellow who paid $230 dollars for it wants to have himself a 1960 Christmas, that’s his choice. He should enjoy it.
While i love collecting razors I'm not the type of collector that would ever buy this set. I would leave that to the real collectors. I would, however, recommend to the owner that it remain in it's packaging and never come out. It is extremely rare to even see one in this condition.
I bid up to 130 for it and new I would never win it, but I wanted to see what it sold for. My concern would be if you open it that small spring inside it has not moved for 50 years! Would it even work? Sometimes using things is better then having it sit around.
I have one it is original box that has never been used. It was not my intent to not use it but I have a couple of Fatboys that I use so I just never got around to using it.
Interesting story behind the razor which I'll paste here for future reference (don't know how long ebay persists info)
From EBay Item Description:
Gillette Adjustable Razor
This was found in the rafters of an attic in Miami in 1971, the house was built in 1959. I don't know the actual date it was purchased. Was wrapped for Christmas sometime between 1959 and 1971, and forgotten. Since 1971 it’s just been tossed in a box of old stuff of my family’s. It has never been opened, but the card backing was folded when it was wrapped, and so over time the “pop out” backing and the glue on the front has become looser. As I understand it, this style is sometimes known as “fat boy.”
