Norton Hone

I picked up a Norton 8K at a pawn shop today for $20 with a box so I thought it was a good deal. It seems to have a film right in the middle as if it's metal. If you run your fingers over the stone you feel the rough parts and it comes completely smooth over the "film." I think it's just metal but can the stone be cleaned with an abrasive or maybe a DMT plate?

Yeah, you can use wet/dry sandpaper on a really flat surface (glass or granite or something similar). Do not lap it on anything that you intend to use for razors. What you described sounds like glazing of the stone from residual metal. Not a major deal. :wink2:

Awesome! Thanks Paul.

Now I have two 8K's....what in world am I going to do with two 8K stones:lol:

It's just glazed. Easy to fix.

I need to start looking for a finer hone. What I have simply isn't working.
