Barber's hone

Some years back I bought a swatty barbers hone from a guy in Alaska and set it aside. I dug it out today and lapped it. I read somebody's comment that they though barber hone grits were 8k at best. This one seems finer than my Norton 8k by a little bit. Tried stroking a razor on it and seemed to work fine. I thought small handheld would not work for me but this one seemed good. With a full set of stones in the work shop, I don't see much call for the swatty. Guess it will get set aside and pulled out again in a few years.

They can put a shareable edge on a razor.

Norton's 8K is equivalent to Naniwa's 5K.

Everybody doesn't define K exactly the same way.

If someone likes a stone, they like it, that's that.

But If I had to choose between touching up a tugging edge on my Snow White or a Swaty, I will choose the Snow White every single time.

The Swatys I've owned weren't all that fine, really, the striations tell the story. They will make a failing edge cut better but they aren't all that relevant in today's market; the 2 µm Shapton G7 is a big step forward.

I have shaved off Swatys but I have shaved off my Shapton Pro 1.5k too.

I like Swaty hones, they're kinda like historical functional art.
