Noob, Where to Start ?

So I'm on the fence about taking up this hobby but lets say I do. What do I need to start and where do I go to get it?

Thank you Luc, I am however familiar with that link and was more interested in the brown leaf noob starter info.

oh snap, my apologies, I can't help you here, I did not notice where you posted.

Just curious, which part of the hobby are you thinking of? Cigars? Pipes? Snus? Snuff? Also do you have a budget in mind on what your thinking of spending?

thanks for trying luc, maybe you should leave this to the Brown leaf professionals. :001_tt2:

If a pipe, you cannot go wrong going to CVS or Walgreens and picking up a Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipe and some pipe cleaners. If you have a local tobacconist, go in and talk to them. You can get samples of a variety of pipe tobaccos to try. Also, give Cornell & Diehl and get a custom sampler built. I would link you to their website, but my work computer won't allow me to go to tobacco sites. Just google "Cornell & Diehl"

on edit: A Czech tool can be had for a couple bucks and are handy, though not necessary. It has a tamper, a spoon shaped tool for cleaning out the ash when finished, and a reamer. Like I said, not entirely necessary, as you can make do with things like a roofing nail for tamping, etc, but it is a handy "all in one" tool.

I was indeed talking about a pipe, I am not interested in the rest and as far budget maybe $50 would be the most in case I regret my decision and change my mind

Are you in the Portland area? If so, you can buy 1/2oz samples of lots of different stuff at 82nd Ave. Pipe and Tobacco. They have Missouri Meerschaums, too. I had a pipe when I re-started this whole thang, but I walked out of there with 6 or 7 things to try, plus pipe cleaners, a pipe tool and a Clipper lighter (sweet lighter!) for about $12.. woulda been $20 with a MM cob pipe.

a missouri meerschaum corn cob is a great way to start and costs only about $5. If you want something a little bit nicer but still entry level, you can probably get your hands on a Dr.Grabow for about $25. A czech pipe tool is nice and ususally only runs like $2. A pipe cleaner. As far as tobacco, lots of guys around here would suggest Capt Black white label. I think some Lane 1Q or prince albert are also a couple you could try.

That is how I started except I went to the house of calabash in Oregon City for my tobacco. Absolutely amazing blends. Made starting easy!

Portland it an hour and a half from me, I'm in the Corvallis / Albany area but it is still a possibility

Worth the drive to make it to the shop if you enjoy it. There has to be a tobacco shop near you that can set you up basically the same way for $20. If not send me a PM and I will help you out.

So lets say I want to upgrade from a cob pipe and smoke from wood, what do I look for as a starter? And my pallet for tobacco is geared for a mild sweet smoke and I would rather spend more on good tobacco than a pipe.

For a beginner briar, you can't go wrong with either Dr. Grabow or Mr. Brog.
