Noob need help finding a good brush

Hi Gents,

I have been shaving for 3 weeks now and love all the items I have purchased except my brush. It's a Tweezerman and just feels way to rough. I was thinking about trying different kinds of brushes as I only have exp with the one. I'm thinking a boar, badger, and synthetic to see what I like. I'll probably go with a Semogue boar and a H.I.S synthetic due to everyones advice but I'm stuck on the badger. I want one that is soft but is good for lathering soap or cream in a mug. I looked at the high end one at The art of shaving but felt that for that price I should be getting better. I would like to keep the Badger under 100$, so what do you guys recommend? I appreciate any advice I can get before spending the cash.

For boar you cant go wrong with either Semogue or Omega. With synth, I think you've made up your mind but see my thread on my lastest FS sythn. As for Badger, you cant go wrong with a Simpsons Duke 2 in best. However if you want to shave some money I'm sure other will chip in with Badger recmendations. For me I went down the FS route. The Finest range is quite good.

Here's the question everyone knows is coming.....

Do you......

Face lather?

OR......

Bowl lather?

What you get recommended will depend on which lather method you prefer to use.

Thanks, I'll check out your thread before I buy. Only thing I'm worried about with the H.I.S is the size, thing seems massive.

One of the better bowl lathering badger brushes under $100 is the Kent BK4.

If you can squeeze together another $26 over your budget get the BK8 which in my opinion is not topped until you get well past the $200 mark in brushes

There are many good badgers under $100. The Simpson Colonel, 57, Duke or Commodore would be very good, as would the Rooney 2/1 or 3/1 in Super.

I'm sorry to ask but what does the 2/1 3/1 stand for?

On Rooney brushes they identify respectively style and size. Hence, for example, 3/1 means style 3 on the handle design and size 1, which is the smallest. By the way, I have the 3/1 Silvertip and it's very nice.

get a good vie long horse hair good backbone nowhere even near the scratchiness of the Tweezer ( I know this sub par brush is remomended to newbies I dont understand why> when for near the same price one can get a horse hair brush... Ill link my new horse as a example http://www.giftsandcare.com/en/horse-shaving-brushes/97-vie-long-horse-hair-shaving-brush-13070.html.) +1 on the Rooney. I just got myself a 3/1 in Super, and it's beautiful. The hair is soft, but has great backbone. I was very impressed with the quality.

Good call on the vintagescent, most sites I have looked at want 45$ without shipping for the SOC. I just ordered it from there for a total of 27.33$. Cant wait to get it.Thanks man. I totally forgot about a horse hair brush, not talked about a lot here. I'll check out the Vielong and do some comparing. Well one brush is down, lol. I really like those Rooneys. It's pretty much between the Kent and Rooney right now, how do they compare to a shavemac? Worth going over my budget or not much of a difference. Lol too many choices.

Thank you for clearing that up, I was really lost with that one.

The Semogue Owners Club, an internet community present in Facebook and Damn
Fine Shave devoted to the wonderful Semogue brushes and part of the Limited
Edition boar brush project think tank, asked me to make a production brush
based on the now famous 2009 Limited Edition boar brush since there were so
many people who missed the chance to own a LE brush. This fine brush has the
best boar bristles available, carefully selected to provide the ultimate
shaving experience. This is arguably the best production boar brush ever
made.

It has the same dimensions and the same special boar hair only present in
the 2009 LE brush. The knot has a 24 mm diameter and 57 mm height. The
handle is 57 mm tall and has 37 mm in its widest point. The only differences
for the LE brush are the undyed bristles and the wooden handle is made of
ash wood instead of cherry wood.

The Semogue Owners Club brush is available exclusively here at Vintage
Scent."

Buying it anywhere else would be silly.

Glad to enable your Soc purchase !! Great boar brush . Really consider horse brushes they combine best features of boar and badger soft ,with great back bone without a badger price .Happy shaving

You can easily buy a lovely brush at Trufitt & Hill for under $100. These are made by Rooney and a great bargain. Moreover you can buy their top-of the-line silvertip for this price. Finally, enter code BB12 at check out and you get 15% off. They have a couple of different handle shapes, various handle colors and 3 different sized knots.

My first brush was an Edwin Jagger Best Badger #1EJ947sds and at about $45 US, it never lost a hair and I like it a lot. My second brush was a Simpson Wee Scott, a fine travel brush but, it's a bit on the wee side for daily use. Everyone should have a Wee Scott! Number three was a Rooney 3/3 Super Badger. I like the EJ and the Wee Scott but, the Rooney is fabulous!
