I arrived on Martha's Vineyard last Saturday for a weeks vacation. As I unpacked my shaving gear i noticed a lathering bowl in the bathroom. I don't know if someone forgot it or if it was part of the decor but what a surprise. The soft water makes fantastic lather.

The only thing that could've made it better would be having a personal bathroom attendant. Would've been a nice touch. 
Housekeeping is now wondering why you keep messing up their potpourri bowl!

Did you take a photo of the lathering bowl?
I suspect this might be the case. My wife caught me eyeballing a finger bowl and knew right away I was thinking it might hold a puck of soap.
I went on a miny vacation last week and in our hotel there was a bowl/shell looking thing, and it was perfect for putting my soap in it and using it for lather. I would have taken it, if not for the $50 service charge for taking any items in the room.

Check with whomever is in charge. If the bowl is not part of the provided amenities, and no one has reported it missing, I'd say you've got yourself a really fine lathering bowl.
