next razor?

I am going to ask for a razor for Christmas, and need some advice: Merkur slant or open-comb 1904?

Here is the background. I currently use a Merkur HD, and get BBS almost every time, with 2.5-3.5 passes. (I know, I know, why questions what already works well...) The weight and balance of the razor is perfect in my hand. It never gives me any weepers, and is a joy to use.

Bearing in mind that I love the physical structure of the HD, which of these razors would you recommend? I am considering the 1904 because it is both beautiful and open-comb, so I might be able to cut down on the number of passes. I know nothing about a slant but have always been curious. I do not know which type of Merkur slant is most similar to the HD in shape. I do not know towards which option I should be leaning.

Any advice you could recommend would be much appreciated!

The 1904 is much lighter than your HD. If you want to try an open comb, the Merkur 11c and 12c are similar, except the 12c is heavier. The EJ/Muhle 41 are open comb, not as heavy as the 12c, and nicer finished (in my opinion). I have a 12c and I get the smoothest shave I have ever experienced. The handle is knurled, and it's a good grip, but the finish of the handle is rough. I would suggest the EJ/Muhle.

After doing a bit of research, I think the 37c is for me. I love my HD so much, and as I understand it, a 37c is the HD, but slanted.

Ok, I can't stand it. I see SE's in SOTD all the time and yet I don't know why people prefer them - because I don't know anything about them. Could you start a thread to convince why I need an SE - compare and contrast kind of thing....please!
