What's new

Next razor after Merkur HD?

Hi there... I have been using a DE razor (the classic Merkur HD) for about 9 months now and feel ready to move to the next step razor-wise. What would be a good next razor? A closer shave is - I suppose - what I am going after...

Try an adjustable. I'd suggest a Slim, or one of the Merkurs if you want something new. If you want to jump ahead a bit, try an open comb or a slant. The options are practically unlimited.
You stuck with an HD for 9 months? Where did you get your RAD vaccination?

Also, since you seem to be immune from RAD, if all you're out for is a closer shave, you might want to try a sharper blade if you haven't experimented with Feathers, Iridiums and the like.

What would you recommend for a lighter rather than heavier adjustable razor?

RAD immunization = other items to collect!

+1 on adjustable. If you want to try vintage, then Fatboy or Slim are excellent choices. If you want to go with modern, then Merkur Futur is an excellent razor that can you can dial from manageable to very aggressive.

I think a Futur may be a bit heavy, given the OP's concern about weight. An unmodified Progress may be just the ticket.

Sorry, you are right. I have a cold and I guess my drowsy cold medicine is affecting my reading comprehension. :out:

If you want something really light, try feather portable.

I don't think you neccessarily need to think of moving from the HD as the 'next step'. It's a fantastic razor. I've tried a few, it was my first and it's still my favourite.

I know the Slims are uber popular, but it's the hardest razor for me to get along with. Probably about the same weight as the HD, but I find it irritating at low settings, so don't use them. No mater how I dial it up it still seems to have a smaller 'sweet spot' than the HD.

The Progress is weighter and top heavy compared to the HD. But can go far more aggressive.

An HD slant or open-comb. Why not try both?

You should try a 2009 Muhle R89 or anything EJ with the similar head. I just have one and it is great! Although not that much different when you compared them when you look at them. But when you shave with it, it is quite different. Smoother than the HD. I enjoyed allot more than the HD.

If you're merely looking for a closer shave, IMO you don't really need anything beyond the HD.. Coupled with a good sharp blade of your choice, the HD will provide as close a shave as about anything out there... I shaved with an Indian Wilkinson in my HD yesterday, and absolutely could not believe how close a shave this combo delivered, and that Wilkinson already had five shaves under it's belt.
All this talk might lead someone to believe that the Merkur is my favorite razor. It's not! But it's a tool that gets grudging respect...

Now, if you just want another razor, which everyone here can certainly understand, the field is wide open!

I think Loner16's right. I just want another razor. So after reading more, I think I might try an open comb for a change. The 3 Merkurs that I can get hold of at the place I usually buy from are the 1904, 12C and 15C. Of these, I am leaning towards the 15C as it's the lightest. Any thoughts?

I have both the 11C and the 1904 open combs, I recommend either. The 1904 is much lighter, if that's what you prefer. While the 1904 is very attractive, the 15C has a handle with a better grip, and a chrome finish as opposed to the nickel finish of the 1904.

While I personally do not like long handle razors, there is also the 25C; which is the long handle open comb version of the standard Merkur. I have read a lot of praise for this razor. See the reviews section.
