Newbie - needs help getting started with safety razor shaving

Been shaving with the Gillette 5 blade system and the cost of blades is too high. I shave 5 days a week and shave my face and head. Asking for advise on getting started with a safety razor, blades, shave cream, brush etc. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The best starter kit I have seen is at Gary's Sample Shop. http://www.sampleshop.blogspot.com/

This kit cost less than many new razors people recommend for beginners and I believe the vintage razors are of higher quality. I don't shave my head, but I have noticed that a lot of the guys that do like to use a single edge safety razor. These are very affordable and are also great for shaving your face. Check out the single edge forum on this site for more info.

As the stewards and Jerry said, follow those links. Also, when i started my 1st choice was a Super Speed
proxy.php
it is a very mild yet forgiving razor that yeilds great shave results. Then I bought a Silver-tip badger brush

for applying shave cream and face exfoliation. My next thing was the shave cream, I got Bigelow from Bath and BodyWorks at the mall

......... I did light pressure baby hook passes and 3 passes. 1sp pass straight down, 2nd pass across the face and last pass up the face/against grain. If you have any questions i am sure our great members will help you.

Hello and welcome. You're in good hands with those guys up there. They've turned me from a Neanderthal waving my Fusion of facial destruction into the smooth faced, sexy gentleman that I am today.

Welcome, a 40's Super Speed was my first and what I thought was going to be my only razor. Until RAD set in, up to 7 in the 2 1/2 months I've been wet shaving.

Hi,
Welcome to B&B. I'm not a head shaver, and I don't know any, but jeffriley says that many of them like single-edge razors. I'd be happy to PIF you a SE razor, and a mild double edge (probably a ball-end tech) and a pack of blades for each - send me your mailing address via PM.

Learn technique with the double edge - there are many resources here on B&B. After you're comfortable with a mild DE like a Tech, you can start with the SE - look at the newbie threads in the SE forum - you need to use an insanely steep angle with an SE.

I haven't addressed prep, which is almost more important. Someone else can explain about badger vs boar vs horsehair brushes, and different soaps and creams. Suffice it to say that can of Barbasol is definitely *not* going to do the job. Help this guy out - get him some soap and a brush. Head shavers need to cover more territory, so he might want a big-*** brush.

Hope this helps,
Tadas
