Newbie Cologne Questions

Newbie, here. How do you guys determine what colognes to wear with what AS splash? Trial and error? Granted, AS fades pretty quickly, but do we just rely on that for no conflict with cologne? I'm a bit hesitant to spritz on my Cool Water or Kenneth Cole Reaction with my Clubman Bay Rum. Maybe I shouldn't look before I leap so much.

That's a tricky one. If you use something like Pinaud Clubman, it's a pretty strong AS in its own right.

If you like Clubman, you may want to see if they also have a cologne or EdT to wear with it (someone will weigh in).

I tend to use the Trumpers Skin Foods myself. While they have a "scent," it is very fleeting and doesn't interefere with whatever EdT or EdP I wear.

There are likely some scents that would work "along" with Clubman, but then you're boxed into those scents.

Clubman's a toughie as an AS. It's got more legs than most AS.

Stylin, Are you thinking of the regular Clubman AS/Cologne, or the Pinaud Vrigin Island Bay Rum, which I think is what the OP mentions?

To me, most bay rum fades pretty fast. The purer it is bay tree leaf and nothing else scent, the faaster it fades, which to me is as it should. Pinaud VI BR though perhaps not as fast or as thoroughly as some BRs, because it has substantial clove and cinammon in it, at least to my nose. I use Superior 70 BR every day, and I do not think it clashes, but it is very pure bay tree leave aroma and is pretty light in scent anyway. I also pretty much wipe it all off and apply a fairly neutral ASB, which may dilute any lingering aroma from the BR. Also, lately I have been mixing half and halg S70 and witch hazel. If you want an AS that leaves no aroma, you could use straight unscented witch hazel, whcih to me fades out completely very quickly.

I would say experiment with the Pinaud Clubman BR and see if you think it has a substanial lingering scent that clashes with whatever edt you are wearing. I would not immediately apply an edt over the BR anyway, and I would wipe the BR off with a towel. If you think it does, try a purer and or lighter BR, or just a lighter altogether AS.

I do think the regular Clubman AS/Cologne is a good match with certain scents and will clash with others. But even where it is a good match, its scent will come through. It will not completely fade away. Nothing wrong with using it by itself. I would tend to use something more neutral or ephemeral, if I was going to apply an edt though! I do not have a lot of patience for trying to match things!

Although, I do use SCS Bulgarian Lavender ASM often enough, which has quite a bit of scent, which I assume lingers at least to some extent. But lavender, especially a deep rather than bright one, works in well with lots and lots of scents, many of which have lavender in them in the first place!

D'OH! Yes, I was thinking of the basic Clubman. Have not tried Bay Rum.

If it fades, you only have to worry about the overlap period where both AS and EdT are competing.

If you like Cool Water, then get some Aqua Velva Ice Sport. The scent seems to be a Cool Water type and doesn't last long anyway. Not quite as cooling as the regular AV, but still pretty good for a drug store AS.

To my nose, Pinaud's Bay Rum lasts for quite a while. If you like it as a scent, you could buy a bay rum cologne or search for notes on Basenotes. If i shave with Pinaud's VI Bay Rum, I don't wear any other cologne. In fact, I don't pair any Pinaud products with anything else. Same with Aqua Velva.

Likewise, if I'm using an old school aftershave like Old Spice or English Leather, I might let it go at that or use the matching cologne.

If I intend to wear a nice cologne, I use a lightly scented or unscented AS. Lucido is a great unscented splash; with the exception of MANDOM, most of the Japanese aftershaves also fade away quickly. St. Charles Shave also makes nice aftershaves that you can work in with many fine fragrances. On me, Boosters doesn't seem to linger very long either.

This all makes sense. I was kinda thinking along those lines. Think I'll pick up some witch hazel to use on the days I feel like putting on a nice edt.
