New to Shave Soaps - Wanting Recommendations!

Hello Everyone!

I recently had a friend pull me away from my Gillette Fusion, and into the life of safety razors. My family is constantly badgering me to figure out something I want for Christmas, and I think this year I may be able to finally give them some suggestions. I'm mostly looking for soaps, but if you have any other products that you think are necessary, please don't hesitate to provide recommendations!

Thanks!:biggrin1:

soaps?

Shave sticks (they are soap too)

Arko
LaToja
Polmolive

Puck soaps:

D.R. Harris Arlington
Cella
Mitchells Wool Fat
Tabac

Any from the above list should make you very happy if it arrives under the tree with your name on it

It depends on how rich everyone is . . .

First, if you don't have a brush, you'll need one. That can be a drugstore purchase (Omega's are common), or you (or loved ones) can spend as much as you want online.

Proraso or CR Bigelow (I think they're the same) is a good reasonably-priced shave soap. More expensive (and IMHO, better) are "Mitchell Wool Fat" and Tabac. I suggest buying the "refill" for those two, and finding a small bowl to store them in.

There's a whole world of soaps, and everyone has his favorite. Since a cake ("puck") of soap lasts for 100 or more shaves, it's easy to accumulate a bathroom counter full of them. Just ask my wife . . .

I highly recommend Mama Bear soaps, especially if you want something animal-free. They're 20% off until Saturday.

Thankfully my friend hooked me up with both a good razor, and a decent brush, so I have those two. I've also got one CR Bigelow tube. I mostly want something in the "puck" variety, just to try it. Thanks so far for the recommendations!

Hmm...

If you want to keep the cost down, Razorock has excellent soaps. L'Occitane Cade soap and Art of Shaving (suggest lavender or sandalwood) sometimes can be found locally, if time is an issue.

Have you thought about Aftershaves?

I actually haven't though about an Aftershave, and I do have an Art of Shaving quite close. I've been told they tend to be overpriced though =/

The soap performs really well for me. Looking at their site...30$? I feel like they raised prices since I purchased one, or maybe I have just become more knowledgeable. I get just as good a lather with Razorock at a third of the price. Italianbarber, westcoastshaving, and other online dealers have it. I haven't tried any mama bear or mike's but both are very well spoken of in these parts.

Best of luck

Proraso green, most any of the Queen Charlotte soaps are great too. Mama Bear makes a fine hard soap, also might want to pick up some Cella soft soap...it's one of Italy's finest.

I Coloniali Mango Oil soap in the Terra Cotta dish. Tabac. D.R. Harris (stick or puck.... pick your scent..... I like Arlington). L'Occitane Cade. Klar Seiffen.

Shave sticks were my gateway from creams to soaps. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to lather. My favorite soaps these days are:

Expensive:
DR Harris. (Windsor, Lavender and Arlington my fav scents).

Inexpensive:
Ogallala Bay Rum. I've been using this one for the past month with great results, but I'm a bay rum junkie.

Other must-trys:
Cella
Tabac
