What's new

New to DE razor, Which blade should I start with in pack?

I'm brand new to DE razor shaving and just got my first sampler pack in. Out of these four blades, which would be the best for a beginner?
Feather, Bluebird, Derby, 7 O'Clock

any of them could cut you up if you didn't know how to shave your face or were just plain uncoordinated. The Derby is low end and pretty safe. I'd put the 7oclock in there and shave with no pressure.. with the grain.. then across the grain.. touch up against the grain. Life is too short to use a crappy blade.. Keep the pressure very light and the blade at a nice angle on your face and you can move immediately to a feather.. but your technique will need to get better. You can try many different blades while working on your technique. Wet lather is better for glide than dry lather.

I will add that if you used only Derby's for an extended period of time when you first start shaving then you could pick up some bad habits, such as using pressure to get a close shave from a dull blade like Derby. You should work in some nice sharp and smooth blades like the 7o'clock black and Feather to keep your technique focused and rapidly improving.

respectfully YMMV..Derbys are in my rotation and for me a good go to blade

Thanks everyone. I started my first few shaves with the Derby. So far haven't been getting the results I was hoping, but at this point toss that up to lack of good technique. Lots of tugging and weepers. However to your point Alphonse, I'm thinking of giving the Derbys a few more shaves and then switching it up to a sharper blade. http://badgerandblade.com/vb/member.php/43526-Alphonse

Throw out the Derbys.
Trade the Bluebirds.
Start with the 7 O'clocks
Then use the Feathers.

Thanks,
Mike

+1. This is what I'd do.

I find Derby's are only good in vintage razors and the Feather to sharp to start with, so 7 O'clocks by all means for starts.
