New to DE field

I am new to the arena of De shaving. To start with, I'm planning buy an Merkur 42(1904) or a EJ De89. On Amazon i saw the one person has complained that the nickel plating of the new merkur 42 has worn off. That is resulting a patch of corrosion on every blade replaced. since i heard that Merkur is the best in the world it is confusing? Can an expert support me to find the best one? If you can give me pros & cons it will be very helpful.

I would question the review that stated the plate came off, many cyber reviews are not accurate or correct

+1+1 -- I own Merkurs, and they're great razors. The plating is exceptionally good; it is of the highest quality. If I were you, I would ignore any review that said otherwise. Incidentally, I've been wet-shaving for 40 plus years, and I've had a lot of experience with all types of razors and just about all brands, so I do know a little bit about razors, and I can say from personal experience that Merkurs are among the best. And either of the razors you mentioned will serve you well. Enjoy your journey into the world of DE shaving!

I am a fan of the DE89! The plating is second to none!

I have 3 Merkurs, and one EJ89BLB. The chrome on the EJ is far superior IMHO.

Another vote for the EJ89L. It's an easy razor to get used to.

Start with an EJ89 and Merkur HD (34C)... sell whichever one you like least or both. The I would check out a vintage SuperSpeed and maybe then try a Merkur Progress, Slant or Gillette Adjustable. Throw in an open comb somewhere along the line.

Merkur makes a decent razor, but I think there are somewhat inferior with the pot metal and plating jobs.

Go for the EJ 89. Can't beat the quality in my opinion.
