What's new

New Scrupleworks.

These are just a couple of inital pics. It arrived last night, and wow what a strop. It is the 3" Norwegian oil tanned cowhide/linen.

Torolf's linen is the best I have used to date. it is fast with a great sensation of abrasion, and after it breaks in it is so soft you would not know it is linen at all. The leather is a real treat. It is not as lustrous as my Horween oil tanned horse, but just as supple. I could litterally roll the strop completely up if I wanted to.

the draw on the leather is an absolute dream to use. It is medium to heavy, and is so smooth and velvety you would think you are stropping on a stick of warm butter. I really cannot think of anything negative at all. it is a fantastic strop.

I will get some better pics of it up later. Sorry for bad pic quality.

Oddly, even disturbingly, this is the most intriguing part. I cannot now let go of the need to own one of these strops.

I'm going to the fridge now and take out a stick of cold butter.

Bwahahahaha!

Beautiful strop, Jon; I'm jealous!! :thumbup1:

Thanks JP

I am GREEN with envy!!! I have a scruppleworks on order and the waiting is killing me!!! Nice looking strop.

Which one did you order? The Oil tanned Horween, or Norwegian Cow hide? I have both, they are amazing!

I am gonna try to forget I read this

Good luck with that Kent.

Beautiful work.
Surely cannot wait for mine to arrive as I have an order in...
Oil tanned Horween
But have to wait for more linen to arrive.
Couple of weeks.

OK guys here is the deal. Bear with me, it is hard for me to describe these charachteristics.

I will not offer advice on the linen, as the feel and results are identical on both strops.

1st the Oil Tanned Horween.

Draw is medium leaning to heavy. If you have been using a fast strop you will consider it heavy. It is easy to get used to.
It is a more firm leather, and if you are stropping a hollow ground blade it will make it sing.
Leather has a sheen to it reminecent of Cordovan, but not as lustrous.
You can hear and feel the abrasion, but the action is rock solid smooth. Not as buttery as the Norwegian Cow hide.
Refines an edge faster than the Cowhide. I always get a 4+ HHT coming off this one with a coti only edge.
Results are the same whether used with some pressure, or none at all.

2nd the Norwegian Oil Tanned Cowhide.

Draw is heavy
Leather is noticably softer than the Horween. the only word I can think of is spongy...in a great way.
The leather is matte, and has no sheen. it is smooth and velvety in feel when rubbing the strop with the palm.
The sense of abrasion is eveiden to the touch and ear. Not as pronounced as the Horween.
Feel is soft and very buttery smooth.
Results vary based on pressure. Not sure on the HHT results. I have been in a honing slump latley.

Well there you have my comparison. Workmanship is top notch. There are some incinsistencys, but I don't take those into account. Torolf has a very small operation, and the volume he has to fill must be staggering.

I will post some side by side comparison pics this evening or tomorrow.

Great Review, Jon. You're making me much closer to pulling the trigger on one!

Wow, Thank you for the review and great timing. Torolf sent me an e-mail today saying mine goes in the mail tomorrow!

give it about 15-20 days Brian. I think it would be quicker, but customs does not seems to get in a hurry for anything.

OK Gents as promised here are the pics. Horween is the one with the black handles, Norwegian is the tan handles.
