What's new

New pipe man, reporting for duty.

I have been lurking in the Brown Leaf for some time thinking about how I would love to enjoy a pipe with my evening read. Well, SWMBO and I were reminiscing about our grandfathers who were pipe smokers and about how we both enjoyed the bouqet of the pipe tobacco. So I mentioned that I would like to give the pipe a try and she agreed!

So here I sit with my CVS bought MM cob and some PA preparing to light my first bowl and I owe it all to you gents! There will be smoke wafting skyward from my little patch of heaven in SC in your honor tonight.

She even believed me when I said it would be a 'cheap' hobby...hehehehe. Showed her tonight's receipt ;)

Nice! How was the first bowl?
From now on, "roughly as much as that first pipe and pouch of tobacco" is the official answer to "how much was it?" :biggrin1:

'Shiznit that is some fine advice. I wonder if I could pull that one off. Hmmmm

Welcome Allan! Glad to have you around!

Bowl #1 was interesting. No bite but I did have issues with keeping the PA lit. This was my fault as I did a poor job filling and tamping. I am also smoking a hair too fast but feel sure my pace will slow as I become more comfortable. Bowl #2 was absolute pleasure this afternoon. Revisted the wiki on filling ones bowl and had 2 relights over a 45 minute smoke! Still feel like I am going a bit fast and will focus on that next...now time to start looking for another pipe and different tobaccos :).

Oh B&B, come for the shaves and hold on...who knows where you might end up! One thing is certain, I am hooked. At least PAD will slow down my RAD...right? Hehehe

Wishful thinking!

A metaphor that helped me slow down when I started smoking a pipe was to "act like I was stealing the smoke from the bowl".

Welcome aboard. As much as you are enjoying yourself now, believe me, it'll get a lot better!

Welcome, Allan! Sounds like you are hooked already! :thumbup1: Don't measure your smokes by "relights", just measure by enjoyment. Relights are not like nicks in shaving. I'd rather relight a few times than have to puff like a madman to keep an ember going.
