What's new

NEW or REFURBISHED ???

When it comes to upgrading a cell phone, what do you guys think...should a person buy new or a refurbished phone?

i am looking at the Blackberry Bold 9700. If I go new it would be $300 but I would get a $100 gift card...

If I would go refurbished, it would be free...

The new phone has a one year warranty, while the refurb carries a 90 day warranty.

But if it works, it works...

I would appreciate your viewpoints.

Hmmm, this is something we don't have in Australia. I guess you would know if a phone was working properly within 90 days.

I say go the refurbished and use it as much as possible in the 90 days. If it last that long then it probably will last a year.

If the refurb if from the factory then go for it as often it means something like reinstalling the software and it gets sold as a refurb as they cant sell it as new.

I bought Dell computers this was and saved a bundle.

Don't know about cell phones but I got my (then new) PowerBook G4 in 2004 for a ridiculous discount simply because it was refurbished. I've since upgraded of course but the old PowerBook still works fine. I wouldn't be scared of refurbished personally....the way it was explained to me was that the Macs that arrive DOA (dead on arrival) are sent back and fixed and then offered at discount as 'refurbished'. Usually the problem was something minor and easily-fixed and then you're left with an essentially new, perfect item that can't really be considered 'new' but for all intents and purposes IS new.

I've done the continuous upgrade cycle with my cell phone company for both personal and work phones, when I got a new phone, the old phones got donated to Womens Shelters, and there was absolutely nothing wrong with those phones after a year+ of heavy use.

Sure, refurbished is a slight gamble, but 200 bucks is 200 bucks and that's 200 bucks that could be better spent on something shaving related.

Never bought a refurb, but I use that Blackberry Bold 9700 and it is an incredible phone (mainly for business/e-mail purposes) and synchs very well with Outlook. Good Luck.

Sometimes companies have to call open-box products "refurbs" even though they weren't even used. Not sure if that's the case here, but I've definitely saved plenty of dough by going refurb in the past.

everybody is pointing at the iphone...but for business i am leaning very hard on this device. it eems to offer what i need in a phone and what i load on it. Maximizer Contact Manager software...

Thank you for the opinion, it is greatly appreciated.

I have one of the original Bolds and I agree that it is a great phone. That said, the early ones had some QC issues. For example, if I leave mine on, the battery drain is minimal, but if I physically power off, it is completely drained when I get up in the morning. I can't explain it, and neither can they. In this case, I would opt for new, as the manufacturing kinks should be resolved.

Save your money and buy refurb. If they have been reconditioned by the factory, it should be okay.

I agree. I have purchased a lot of refurb electronics and the only item I had a problem with was under the warranty period and it was fixed with little headache.

well i pulled the trigger and bought a NEW one...for one reason only...they matched a Wal-mart in store price, not the online stuff.....so for $80 after taxes i upgraded to this phone, i will have to learn how to use it...

ATT also grandfathered my unlimited data plan for the same price of $30 a month....

so...what's this button for ?

Great deal! :thumbup1: The BB is a great phone and becomes quite natural after just a little bit of time. To me, for business, it is the best hands down.
