What's new

New member, just acquired this Gold Gillette razor, trying to confirm what it is.

Just acquired this Gillette razor, it's my first foray into non-cartridge shaving so wish me luck!
Wondering which model it is, and the best way to clean it. Came with two gillette blades, each in a small red/black/white envelopes.

Gillette NEW, with a common bar handle and long comb head, I think. Other members may be able to furnish the year from the reissue pat. dates.

Nice find, I hear those shave well, open combs tend to be a bit more aggresive then the ones with a guard bar "Flat Bar" Ive never shaved with My long comb, common bar handle. Maybe others who have will chime in soon )

US1858316 is actually the latest of all the patent numbers on there. It was issued on May 17, 1932, so the razor couldn't be any earlier than that.

The smooth band on the handle just under the neck is the sort we'd expect to see on a NEW from a Red & Black set (like the one below), but I can't say definitively that they were exclusively used there.

From the picture, it looks like lacquer has been partially removed from the cap, probably from hard polishing. These depression-era razors are famous for their very thin gold wash, with no brass underplating. Do not use any harsh polish on this razor to avoid removing the gold. Most NEW that we find have long ago lost their plating!

They are great shavers and well-enjoyed by many. Congrats on a very nice find!

By the way, fastscirocco, welcome to Badger & Blade!!
