New House - New Den - aaaand antigravity brushes

We just finished up building our new house so of course I had to build a new shaving den to go in the new place. Along the way I thought to mount 'rare earth' magnets in my brushes for a handy drying solution - no more countertop clutter!

Razor Hooks (going to add some more, I'd like to be able to hang 4 razors)

Rare earth magnets mounted in handles - need to polish the bottoms better, only hit them with 180 grit paper so far...

Still need to seal the bottom of this one with some poly:

Short (but large) metal screws in the bottom of the cabinet

MAGIC BRUSHES:

I'm happy with how the brush system worked out. I generally only have one brush out at a time drying out, but it's nice to have room for more.... It was a fun project and it feels great to have a proper shaving den - this is a big upgrade from the bottom drawer in the old vanity (especially since I'm 6'5" - not a fan of bending down that far) so it's great to have everything up at eye level.

On a side note, any other woodworkers out there?

That is the nicest looking cabinet I think I've ever seen.:001_wub:

Whats that flat black handled boar brush crammed in the corner?

Thanks! - as for the brush, that's an Omega 49, I mangled the bottom trying to mount the magnet and it took so much sanding to fix it, I ended up sanding the whole handle for a matte finish, I like it better now, it really improves the grip.

Good job, really.
I usually prefer 45 degrees joints for the frames, but it's just a matter of personal preference.
And, to hold the mirror in the frame, you made the external frame with a top batten like a sandwitch, right?

I particularly like the razor hooks and the wood finishing (is it wax?).

I've made both styles of frames and like both equally, in this case the bathroom vanity is a shaker style thus the butt joint frames in the mirror to match. The frame is grooved out with a recess for the mirror which is attached with a flexible silicon adhesive.

It's made of cherry and the finish is 3 coats of a mahogany stain and 3 coats of matte poly with steel wool in between each coat. Buffed with wax and steel wool.

Thanks, it interests me a lot the way you attached the mirror. So there's not an open batten to slide the mirror in, you jointed three battens before then put the mirror before putting the last batten and close the frame, right? But in the pics I see the front frame mounted without the mirror.. ?

Everytime I see one of these threads with you genius woodworkers all I can think of is how much better my wife could have done in her choice husbands.

That is phenomenal.

The frames were completed prior to installing the mirror, there's a recess in the back of the frame where the mirror drops into the frame and is secured with silicone. The reason for doing this is it makes applying the finish (which took just as long as the build) much easier without the mirror in the way. If it were just a wood panel instead of a mirror I would have grooved the frame and constructed it as one piece - but in that instance the wood panel would take the same finish as the frame, and not need to be out of the way like the mirror.

I understand now, thanks.
I like the hooks you've used, but if you'll want more razors, what about a DE steel rail to hold the razors, like in the following sketch?

The rails could bent if the distance is too long, though.
