What's new

new guy needs help in finding a good soap please

hey guys i just picked up 5 different scents of classic shaving soap from here

http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/522960/198657.htm

i cant really say anything on it because i have nothing to compare it to..but it does take a few minutes to work up a lather but its not really thick like ive seen some others..but im not just looking for thickness of lather..im looking for something thats good overall..or if someone can tell me if i made a good purchase picking up those classic brand shaving soaps? for price wise im looking to spend up to $5-$15 per container

Welcome to Badger and Blade. Tabac is a soap that would fit your lathering and pricing requirements. Some folks take umbrage at the scent, though I love it.

I do not have any experience with the soaps that you purchased.

thanx for the suggestions, i read the reviews up on top and it seemed tabac is very popular and the prices isnt so bad either..i just picked some up online..thanx

Welcome to B&B. I have used the classic shaving soap before and did not like it. The lather was not very good in my estimation. Tabac certainly performs well. In your price range, check out some of the glycerin soaps from Mama Bear, St Charles Shave and QED.

For how long have you been trying to lather with these soaps ?
You might just need a few more work on it. Try to change some parameters : load more soap on your brush, more water, less water, lather in a bowl or directly on your face...

Try to adjust your technique. If your technique is bad, changing to a new soap might not be helpful.

Don't worry, the Tabac should do you right. I too used Classic Shaving soap first, and wasn't really happy with it, but didnt have anything to compare it too. Luckily I found a Crabtree and Evelyn nearby, that soap was a vastly different experience.

tabac is a great starting place because it's easy to get lots of decent lather and any of the milled soaps will last a long time

i'd also consider a speick shave stick. with a wet face, simply swirl the stick around to cover your face with soap and then with a semi-wet brush, whip up some lather. the speick stick makes thick, mild lather and it's very very small making it great for traveling

You cant go wrong with DR Harris...I prefer the Arlington...but they are all nice!! I don't pay the bucks for the wooden bowl...I just mill a puck down into a pyrex bowl. Awesome stuff!

Welcome to B&B!

I would start with something like Proraso and see how it goes from there, I can't comment on those soaps...

If you want to pick a few of those, I would suggest going for stuff that you like. If you like flowers, try things like Rose, Lavender, etc...

I'll just add that, if you haven't, you should be sure to check out our review section. Lots of great options for us. Welcome!

The scent of Tabac will become nicer and more pleasant everytime you use it
I think the word "addictive" describes it best. :biggrin1:

Denali, this video may be a little extreme, but it should give you some idea about how much soap you need to load on the brush. Just go a little easy on mashing the brush.
