What's new

New Feather vs. Old Gillette

I've satisfied most of my acquisition disorder for the time being, but I find myself debating over my next pursuit. I've been looking at vintage New Standards, Aristocrats, and the like on eBay and in the Shaving Mall forum on this MB. Then I noticed all the good reviews on the new Feather DE. Just an informal poll, but I'd be interested to hear what others would choose and why. What say you?

I am of the opinion that we DE shavers have a vested interest in purchasing newly manufactured razors. This way, we show the manufacturers that there *is* a market and they are inclined to maintain their current level of support.

That being said, there is also value in "reclaiming" the previously-owned stock as well, if for no other reason than the "collection" aspect of ownership.

In the interest of full disclosure, I own exactly two razors, both of them were purchased as new. I don't have the room to acquire much more in the realm of razors, so won't be haunting antique/junk/resale shops for them any time soon.

ETA: I would REALLY like to rationalize the new Feather stainless steel razor. I think it's got great lines. But I still don't have room for it.

Very good point, Geordon. I hadn't thought about it that way, but you make a good case for buying new.

As for a comparison, I have most of the old Gillettes. All of them are good, but I've been using the Feather SS a lot recently. Can't really think of a fault aside from the price, but I anticipate keeping it forever. Feather did a wonderful job with it.

Very good question. I have the ASR (fathersday gift) and a real (at least the head) Gillette 102 oc from 1915. I give the edge to the oc, but that is me I guess. OC's are for me as smooth and safe as the ASR. And (for me important, as that is part of the fun for me) I picked it up for only a few dollars.

My compliments. You are displaying a degree of rational constraint that I clearly do not have.

Two words...stainless steel!

You could beat the sh*t out of a Feather AS and in 100 years someone will be buying it from an estate sale and it will still look brand new.
