What's new

New Feather Artist Club

I've been wet shaving for about 9 months and tried my hand at Straights.

I like the ability to get at hard places on my face like under my nose etc. so several months ago I purchased a traditional straight. It was great but there is no way I can hone and strop a blade on a regular basis.

So I recently purchased a Feather shavette, a Feather Artist Club with a set of Feather pro guard blades.

I am having a problem shaving my chin and jaw line. I can shave my cheeks, upper & lower lips and lower neck

Any help or advice would be great.

I am not giving up I know it will take time.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave:

First thing I'd do is get rid of the pro guard blades. I found that they tended to nick and cut more than any others. I'd say to get the regular pro blades, I've found these to work the best as they have a bit of flex to them.

As for the chin and jaw line, these are both tough places to get really close at when first starting out. Just take your time, use a very light short stroke, and settle for a presentable shave for now. As you get more experience these area's will get better results. When you shave there be sure to use no pressure, go really light, and use a really flat angle.

For the jaw line, trying using a combination of opening your mouth wide/pulling on the skin of your upper cheek to bring the skin to a flat surface on your cheek.

For the chin, good luck! :001_tongu But seriously, the chin is the toughest part for me, but I've found big improvements lately, using stretching/XTG passes, and guillotine strokes. Feather artists clubs are fantastic, IMO, and I think I'll very rarely use a DE anymore.

Can't hone or strop? Why?

You don't really need to hone. If you only buy shave-ready razors you can keep the edge sharp with a pasted balsa strop used after each shave. Then use the hanging leather strop before shaving.

I personally don't like shavettes. A regular straight is much easier to use. And you never have to buy new blades or toss the old ones.
