What's new

New Dirty Simpson

My awesome wife just gave me an early Christmas present - a Simpson Chubby 2! Needless to say, I was super excited and couldn't wait to lather up and shave with it. So, my shave finally comes along and as I'm lathering, I noticed that my lather started turning light brown. I squeezed/rinsed the lather out of the brush and then squeezed the water out of the brush. The water was also brown. I continued to rinse until the water became clear.

So, do I just need to clean my brush or return it for a new one? I have two more badger brushes and neither of them had this dirty water issue.

Wash it with some dawn, it probably just need a little cleaning. If its fine now and isnt shedding, I wouldn't worry about it.

I notices this with my Semogue 1305. It was like the boar hair had a bunch of dirt in it. I just used my shampoo to wash it and did a few test lathers. All has been good. Good luck with your Chubby!

I do not know if its the same in the shaving brush world, I visited a fine paint bush factory a few years ago .The badger hair is coated with egg white to hold it in shape while they set the knot in the ferrule and its left in place for shipping.

Just recieved my T&H badged Rooney 1/2, and thought I'd make a quick lather with it to clean and bloom it ready for my next shave. Yep, brown lather.

Possibly a feature of denser brushes? I'm not concerned anyway, it's clean and ready to go.

Have had that with a number of brushes and knots ( The Omega 21047 mixed boar/badger was the worse )

Not an issue, I always soak in shampoo, rinse, soak in shampoo, rinse until the brownness is gone ( in fact I do that even if the first soak isn't brown ) before I use anyways.

I've this with new brushes from several makers. About as common as the dreaded badger funk smell it seems. A good shampoo usually takes care of it. Sometimes I use CAR's Hydrolast cube a few times to rinse it, that seems to get the color an smell out pretty well too.

+1 on the dirty water (and funk) on new brushes. I always thought this was more of a dye than dirt since I don't recall seeing it in my bleached boars.

I had it with my Semogue 1305 as well, but I think it's the dye they used to make it banded, not dirt.

Perhaps it is the sterilizing fluid? I'm picturing that brown coloured fluid hospitals use for surgeries.

Some badgers do whatever they have to, like hiding in the dirt, jump in the mud...whatever to avoid becoming a brush

Luckily, I'm not that naive. Now, if you'll excuse me, there's someone on the phone who will send me a prize if one of my credit card numbers is the "lucky one".
