New DE Purchase For Gift

I'm wanting to get my father in law started back shaving with a safety razor. We'd like to buy him a new razor since I'm currently not able to drive and go to the antique shops and yard sales to find a classic model. I need the razor to be decent quality, mild shaving, no more than $25.00. Any recommendations.Or would I be better off buying an older, classic razor?
Thanks

you know what, i actually need some advice as well. I want to get my friend a DE, but i don't know which one.

i did find these two at westcoastshaving.com. The reviews look good, but i was wondering if any one here at B&B has tried them.

there's also a few Parker razors that seem to be in your price range

thanks for making this thread.

For a new razor in that price range, Cadet or Razorock razors are highly recommended around here. I find older Techs, super speeds, and slim adjustables to be fantastic shavers if you decide to go with vintage.

The Weishi razors (I have one) are very mild shavers. As an entry into DE shaving, for somebody used to a cartridge, they're a good choice.

For $25, you have your choice of vintage Gillettes. try local antique shops, and the "buy / sell" listings here.

One other possibility:

www.whippeddog.com

has a Feather DE, which has gotten pretty good reviews, for $10 or $15.

The Whipped Dog DE is not a Feather -- that was a misconception on Leisureguy's site. It's since been corrected. I'm a big fan of Whipped Dog for straights and brushes and such; the no-name DE is not very good, IMO, especially for a newb. It does get the job done; but a vintage Gillette or a Lord L6 would be way better. I'd lean toward a vintage flare-tip SuperSpeed or a Tech. Mild razors, great bang-for-buck. But if you must get something new... .the L6 or one of the Cadet/RazoRock/Matador razors will be good and shiny. The L6 or the vintage razors will probably be milder.
